WWE shows like Monday night gross et Smack down have been on TV for a long time, but their days on cable and network TV might be limited. A recent earnings call with co-CEO Nick Khan revealed that when the broadcast rights for both shows are in place, there's a chance a major player in the Streaming be interested.
Nick Khan and other WWE decision makers like Triple H (who became Chief Creative Officer in July) spoke on the company's second quarter earnings call, and Khan made a statement that might turn some heads. Khan noted that the future of Monday night gross et Smack down could be on a service of Streaming, and suggested that companies like Netflix could be involved in their programming (via Brandon Thurston):
The market is even more crowded for live. Nick talks about deep-pocketed tech players joining the market. Nick thinks that Netflix will become more interested live as they present their announcement level. Big increase for F1. NFL Sunday Ticket should move to the reader of Streaming.
Although nothing has been definitively said about a streamer offering to buy the rights to Monday night gross ou Smack down, Nick Khan makes a good point. Live programming is one of the surest ways to build an audience ready to watch commercials. Whether Netflix hopes its ad-level subscribers will keep watching for a long time, a three-hour show like Monday night gross could be the perfect program to keep anyone with a subscription stuck to the service.
It's interesting to hear Nick Khan mention Netflix in his statement, especially given the relationship WWE currently has with Peacock. The streamer dropped a ton of cash to essentially absorb the WWE Network and retain the rights to its catalog and pay-per-views live stream. One would imagine that he would at least have a chance of acquiring either Monday night gross ou Smack down, in addition to any other service of Streaming. The broadcast deals for both Monday night gross et Smack down will expire on September 30, 2024 (via WhatCulture).
One of the disadvantages of these shows likely to go to Streaming is that fans who want all the WWE content may need multi-brand subscriptions. For example, if Peacock retained the rights to pay-per-views, Monday night gross went to Netflix, and Smack down went to Hulu, that's three subscriptions in Streaming which a fan would need just to watch the main shows.
One advantage is that the services of Streaming are not bound by the same content restrictions as broadcast network television. Just like how shows like The Orville: new horizons evolved to include more swearing and mature themes, there's a chance WWE could do it with Brut et Smack down. Perhaps the United States would have pushed up the rating of Brut in an effort to dissuade WWE from considering a deal Streaming ? The only thing we do know is that the future of WWE programming looks wide open, and who knows where it will be when these deals expire?
For the moment, Monday night gross airs in the US on Mondays at 20:00 p.m. ET, and Smack down Fridays at Fox at the same time. Now might be the perfect time to get a Peacock Premium Membership for the rest of the year, as upcoming WWE live events like Clash at the Castle sound like must-watch TV.
