Apple may be working on an even larger, foldable iPad Pro model, as multiple reports indicate.
Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young recently claimed that Apple is exploring the possibility of offering laptops with foldable screens. The company is said to be discussing such devices with screens around 20 inches with its suppliers. This display size could allow for 4K or higher resolutions, according to Young.
Young revealed a wide range of specific information about Apple's plans, such as the iPhone 13 Pro's ProMotion display, the sixth-generation iPad mini's display size and bezels, screens mini-LED of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with ProMotion. , and more, so his reports are worth taking seriously.
While Young described the device as a "foldable laptop", it's possible that if it's an all-screen device, it's actually a foldable iPad Pro. After all, an all-touchscreen laptop running macOS would likely cannibalize the iPad Pro, so the device running iPadOS might make more sense.
This thought would also seemingly align with Apple's current outlook. Asked about touchscreen Macs last year, John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, pointed to the iPad:
We make the world's best touchscreen computer on an iPad. It is fully optimized for this. And the Mac is totally optimized for indirect typing. We didn't really feel a reason to change that.
There have been sketchy rumors that Apple has been working on a foldable iPad Pro in the past, so the idea wouldn't be entirely unheard of. It's also worth noting that this implementation could also line up with rumors of a larger iPad Pro.
Last summer, BloombergMark Gurman of suggested that Apple is working on even larger iPad models that could still "blur the lines" between tablet and laptop:
I'm told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores in a few years at the earliest. They're unlikely next year – with Apple's focus on a redesigned iPad Pro in current sizes for 2022 – and they may never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for a lot of people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.
Now, at least two Apple suppliers, BOE and LG Display, are gearing up to supply Apple with larger OLED displays for future iPad models.
Young said Apple's foldable notebook launch schedule is "probably later" than 2025, 2026 or 2027 being offered as reasonable possibilities, but there's still a chance Apple will halt the project well before then. . He added that the foldable laptop could be a whole new category of products for Apple, but with so little known about the mysterious new form factor at this very early stage, it still seems possible that the device could be a Foldable iPad rather than a MacBook.
Meanwhile, Young said Apple's foldable iPhone has been delayed until 2025, a significant delay from previous predictions that the device would launch in 2023 or 2024.
