For his interpretation of “Drivers License” – which fell on the platform of Streaming Wednesday, Sept. 21 with new “Forget Me” — Capaldi distilled Rodrigo’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 into a simple, effective piano ballad, aided only by the occasional splash of atmospheric reverb and strings.
“The sidewalks we walked through, I can still hear your voice in traffic, we laugh at all the noise,” he sings, his branded belt rising over melancholic keyboard chords – aka the musical formula that made him famous with songs such as 'Someone You Loved', 'Bruises' and 'Hold Me While You Wait'.
Two days after the cover was released, Capaldi shared his excitement by tweeting some of Rodrigo's lyrics in all caps: "I KNOW WE ARE NOT PERFECT BUT I NEVER FELT THIS WAAAAAYYYY FOR ANYBODY.

The musician also got back into shape with his remake of "Forget Me," a laid-back pop mix released earlier this month as the lead single and title track from his upcoming second studio album. For his Spotify Singles version of the song – which earned him his third UK No. 1 earlier this week – Capaldi once again reduced it to a simplistic piano that highlighted his raw vocals.
