The Gulf states on Tuesday asked Netflix to remove 'offensive content' from its streaming service. Streaming, apparently referring to shows featuring gay or lesbian people.
The request was made in a joint statement issued on behalf of a commission of the Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf, saying that there are programs that "contradict Islamic and social values and principles".
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have also released their own statements through their respective governments. They are, along with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, the six members of the council.
Although the statement did not go into detail, Saudi state television also released video of an interview with a woman identified as a "behavioral consultant", who described Netflix as an "official promoter of homosexuality”. At the same time, he posted images from a cartoon, "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous", in which two women are seen kissing, although the images are blurry.
Saudi state television also aired a segment hinting that the Netflix system could be banned across the kingdom as such shows could reach children.
Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
The move comes after Muslim countries banned Disney's latest animated film 'Lightyear' from airing in June due to a brief scene in which two lesbian characters kiss. After that, the service of Streaming of the company, Disney+, said its "available content must comply with local regulatory requirements" in the Arabian Gulf countries.
Many Muslims view gays and lesbians as sinners. In parts of the Arab world, some members of the LGBTQ community have been arrested and sentenced to prison terms.
