✔️ Top 7 Ways to Fix Screenshots Not Working on Mac
– Reviews News
Taking and sharing screenshots is an essential part of many users' workflows. Similar to Snip & Sketch on Windows, macOS has a built-in screenshot tool. The issue occurs when the Mac is unable to take a screenshot. Read on to fix screenshots not working on Mac.
The default screenshot tool is good enough for most users. We'll only recommend a third-party app (at the end of the article) when you want more features to simplify your routine. Without further ado, let's begin the troubleshooting journey.
1. Use relevant key combinations to take screenshots
Since screenshot functionality is built into macOS, you don't have to worry about launching a separate app on Mac. Just master the following keyboard shortcuts and capture Mac screen in no time .
- Command + Shift + 3 – Take a full screenshot. Be careful when using this command. You can capture sensitive information on a screenshot.
- Command + Shift + 4 – Select an area and capture the screen. Most GT members rely on this shortcut to take screenshots.
- Command + Shift + 4 + Space: Screenshot of the active window. Make sure to keep your cursor in the window to take a screenshot.
Make sure to simultaneously press the correct key combination to enable screen capture on Mac.
2. Check Screenshot Shortcuts
Although macOS enables the screenshot feature at startup, you can check it from the System Preferences menu.
Step 1: Click on the small Apple icon in the upper left corner.
Step 2: Select System Preferences.
Step 3: Go to the Keyboard menu.
4nd step : Swipe to Shortcuts.
5nd step : Select Screenshots from the side menu and make sure the relevant options are enabled.
When other third-party apps use the same screenshot keyboard combinations, you'll still have issues with the default macOS hotkeys. The system will disable them and use screenshots for other functions.
3. Perform NVRAM Reset
NVRAM stores your Mac's basic settings, such as display information, time zone, sound volume, and more. You can reset NVRAM and fix basic crashes on your Mac.
Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and select Shut Down.
Step 2: Hold down the power button and once you hear the startup sound, use the Command + Option + P + R keys for 15-20 seconds.
Once you get back from macOS, use the appropriate keys and try to take a screenshot.
4. Clean MacBook Keys
If you're using a MacBook butterfly keyboard, some keys may become dysfunctional over time. The keys get stuck and do not respond to your input. The practice is largely due to the dust that accumulates under the keys of the MacBook.
Use compressed air and blow under unresponsive keys, including rows of controls, shifts, and numbers. Try your luck taking screenshots. If you're still having trouble registering your keys, it's time to head to your nearest Apple Center to have your keyboard replaced. The company is running a free replacement program for affected MacBooks.
5. Open third-party screenshot app on startup
Many GT members are big fans of CleanShot X, a third-party screen capture tool for Mac. When you use such software to take screenshots on Mac, you need to open the application.
Once you open it, you will see the app icon appear in the menu bar at the top. To continue working smoothly, all you have to do is ask macOS to start the application on startup.
Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and open System Preferences.
Step 2: Go to Users and Groups.
Step 3: Go to Login Items.
4nd step : Click the + icon to open the Applications menu. Select the screenshot app from the list.
From now on, macOS will only open the selected app on startup, and you'll have no problem taking screenshots.
6. Disable Timer
macOS allows users to set a timer to take screenshots after 3 seconds or 10 seconds. If you are facing lag while taking screenshots, this is not a bug but a feature. This is how you can disable screenshot timer on Mac.
Step 1: Press Cmd + Shift + 5 keys and open the screenshot menu.
Step 2: Expand the Options menu and select None for Timer.
7. Update macOS
Before you go ahead and update macOS on your main computer, hear us out. GT does not recommend installing the latest macOS on the primary machine on day one. But if you have one installed and the screenshots are not working, you should check the latest version again.
If this is a widespread bug, others must have reported it to Apple. The company is quickly addressing critical issues with the following update.
Open System Preferences (see the second point) and navigate to the Software Update menu. Download the latest version of macOS on Mac and start taking screenshots.
Capture information on Mac
While you are busy taking screenshots on Mac, you should also check the screenshot export folder. Launch Finder and navigate to the relevant folder to find all screenshots. You also need to turn up the Mac's volume to hear that crisp screenshot sound.
