✔️ Top 3 ways to prevent Windows 11 from automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network
– Reviews News
By default, your Windows 11 PC automatically connects to a saved Wi-Fi network when it's in range. Therefore, you won't need to manually connect your computer to your home or work network. As convenient as it is, you may want to disable this behavior for specific networks, especially if it's a public or unsecured network. Moreover, you can also do this to prevent Windows from connecting to a weaker Wi-Fi network.
Luckily, it's quite easy to prevent your Windows 11 PC from automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Here we show three different ways to do the same thing. So, let's take a look at them.
1. Stop automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network using the Settings app
Windows 11 lets you configure most network details using the Settings app. Follow the steps below to prevent Windows 11 from automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
Step 1: Click the Start icon, then the gear icon to launch the Settings app. Alternatively, you can use the Windows Key + I key combination to instantly launch the Settings app.
Step 2: Use the left sidebar to switch to the Network & Internet tab and click Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Click Manage Known Networks to view all saved networks.
Step 4: Select the network you don't want your computer to join automatically.
5nd step : Uncheck the "Automatically connect when in range" box.
The Settings app will remember your preference. The next time you want to use this network, you will have to select it manually.
2. Stop automatic connection to a Wi-Fi network via the control panel
Although Microsoft is gradually replacing the old Control Panel in favor of the Settings app, you can still use it to make changes in Windows 11. So if you prefer to do things the old fashioned way, here's how you can use Control Panel to prevent Windows 11 from automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
Step 1: Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Write control in the Open field and press Enter.
Step 2: Use the drop-down menu in the upper right corner to select small or large icons. Then click Network and Sharing Center.
Step 3: Click on the Change adapter settings option in the left pane. This will open the Network Connections window.
Step 4: Right-click on the Wi-Fi adapter and select Status from the context menu.
5nd step : In the Wi-Fi Status window that opens, click Wireless Properties.
Step 6: In the Connection tab, uncheck the box "Connect automatically when this network is in range". Then click OK to save your changes.
3. Stop automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network with Command Prompt
The command prompt is the destination of choice for advanced users to make system-level changes. You can use the Command Prompt to run a few commands to prevent Windows 11 from automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi network. This is how you can do it.
Step 1: Right-click the Start icon or press Windows key + X to open the Power User menu. Select Terminal (Admin) from the list.
Step 2: Select Yes when the User Account Control (UAC) message appears.
Step 3: Copy and paste the following command and press Enter to see a list of wireless networks saved on your PC:
netsh wlan show profiles
Step 4: Note the name of the network for which you want to disable automatic connection.
5nd step : Run the following command and press Enter to prevent Windows 11 from automatically connecting to the network.
netsh wlan set profile parameter name="Network Name" connection mode=manual
Replace the network name in the above command with the wireless network name noted in the last step.
The above commands will also work with Windows PowerShell. Once you run them, Windows 11 will no longer connect to the specified Wi-Fi network when in range. You can repeat the above command to prevent Windows 11 from connecting to other networks.
command and control
Connecting to an unsecured Wi-Fi network can put your system and personal data at risk. Besides the methods listed above, you can also prevent Windows from connecting to a network during the initial network setup process.
If you are already connected to a network, you can use one of the methods listed above to prevent Windows from automatically connecting to the network. Although we are only talking about Windows 11 in this article, these methods will also work on Windows 10.
