As Netflix itself predicted, its new season of Stranger Things was well received by global audiences. The news is good for the platform which is going through a difficult period due to the loss of subscribers and increased competition.
To date, as recorded on its platform, season four of the saga has totaled 301,2 million hours viewed, leading the ranking of English-language series between June 27 and July 3.
"With the crisis that Netflix is going through at the moment and the adjustments they are making to be able to compete in an increasingly global market, they have to bet on the franchises that succeed and one of the most successful is Stranger Things, c 'is to say why they need to invest in it, to satisfy the expectations and demand of the public,' explains Jerónimo Rivera, professor at the University of La Sabana, expert in cinema.
The release also sees a boost over previous seasons which, in turn, rank in the top 10 most viewed as of July 3. Stranger Things 1 reaches 34,7 million viewing hours; the second, 30,2 million and the third, 30,28 million.
To achieve these results, Netflix not only specified a strong marketing strategy in the launch countries (for example, in Colombia, it organized a special exhibition in Barranquilla), but also invested monumental figures in production.
Each chapter had a budget of $30 million, with which the total production would have been around $270 million. In addition to the visual effects and notorious compositions, the money was seen in the length of each episode: the first ran between an hour and an hour and a half, while the last is two hours and 30 minutes.
For the Colombian producer, Linda Marín, although the bet of the platform is valid, and it bears fruit, for there to be real relief in the panorama of the company, it will be necessary to venture into a change of economic model at the root.
"Netflix, because of the competition it has with other platforms, is betting on its own content and that's a valid proposition, but I don't know if it will be enough because other producers are betting on specific niches, said the Colombian producer. Linda Marine.
For now, another element that has favored the popularity of the new season is its setlist, as some of the songs have increased their reproductions up to three times compared to a normal day on platforms such as Spotify.
In the case of Colombia, for example, Metallica's "Master of Puppets," which plays at the end of Volume 2 of Stranger Things 4, saw a 215% increase in streams compared to a normal day. To respond to the fury of fans of the series, Spotify has launched two special playlists: "Upside Down" with 50 related songs and another with original songs from last season.
At the same time, reproductions of all music from the 80s have been promoted, the platform registering an increase of 8% worldwide, since the launch of the first installment of Stranger Things 700 in May, with which it assures that " 4s hits are back.
The phenomenon migrated to other social networks such as Twitter, where during the launch days more than 19 million tweets commenting on the series were completed worldwide. The content of the posts, as reported by the app, was mostly positive, one of the most commented topics was the relationships within the series and also the songs.
The Stranger wave also arrived on Pinterest, but in this case it stayed not only in the plot of the story, but also in the trends set by the characters with their outfits.
The images application records that searches related to the series have increased by more than 60% with very specific themes, for example: “Stranger Things outfit ideas from the 80s” or “Stranger Things makeup”.
Commercially, Netflix also saw a good reflection of the launch in its stock market behavior. When looking at the November 2021 figure, its share was close to 600 USD, the figure started to drop in 2022, on May 23, a few days after the launch of the first part of the fourth season, it was 183,5 .XNUMX USD and it was enough that the first scenes started rolling for the price to do so too.
Bloomberg figures show peaks on launch day May 26 at $191,32; 195,18 USD on the 27th and 197,31 USD on the 31st of the same month. The maximum amount, through July 7, was US$205,09, which was recorded on July 2, a day after uploading volume two of the installment.
“A lot of investment does not mean more money, but if you have a large audience, it is likely that it will be more profitable to invest and this will later materialize in an increase in viewer loyalty,” concludes Rivera.
Other series with new successful seasons on the platform
So well, Stranger Things has sido una de las apuestas más grandes de Netflix, en materia de presupuesto y acogida, la plataforma también ha hondado esfuerzos en nuevas entregas de otras productions, est el caso de The Umbrella Academy, cuya más reciente temporada se launched in June. When reviewing the 10 most-watched English-language series between June 27 and July 3, seasons 1, 2 and 3 appear on the list with 32,8 million hours viewed, 20,3 million and 87,9 .XNUMX million, respectively. Filming was done in Canada and another season is planned.
