Looking ahead to the final official reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, I was eager to get a phone that was to be the spiritual successor to the Galaxy Note phones, which were all but killed off after the Galaxy Note 20.
And thankfully, Samsung delivered that with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, seamlessly blending the best elements of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, while adding a few improvements. With its latest flagship, Samsung has created one of the best Android phones and, in fact, one of the best phones you can buy right now. Yet I am mixed.
When I got my hands on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I expected it to take me away from an increasingly beloved iPhone 13 Pro, as I'm a natural big fan of Android phones. But that didn't happen thanks to the stellar consistency of the iPhone 13 Pro experience.

So instead, I expected the Galaxy S22 Ultra to become my go-to Android phone, replacing the excellent but sometimes janky Google Pixel 6 Pro. After all, I love the design of the S22 Ultra, with its flatter, expansive rectangular screen, making it a great screen to watch just about anything on.
And the cameras are simply excellent, especially for zooming. While the S Pen is a nice piece of equipment for what I expected to be the dish of smartphone almost ideal.
But something weird happened.
As I write and test smartphones (among other things) for a living, I have no shortage of flagship phones to reach for, and one of them is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

It's far from a perfect phone, with a chunky design and a cover screen that feels a bit too cramped to use as one uses a non-folding phone. It also doesn't have an included S-Pen and an inferior rear camera array. Still, it's the phone I ended up reaching for over the Galaxy S22 Ultra, something I really didn't expect.
Despite its flaws, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has started to change my expectations of what I want from a great flagship Android phone.
I've said before how good the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is for being productive on the go, but I had thought the Galaxy S22 Ultra would be a challenger given how well Note phones have done to get things done. away from a laptop; I basically S Pen-born my application letter to Tom's Guide on the Galaxy Note 10 Plus.
But even the Galaxy S6,8 Ultra's fantastic 22-inch display pales in comparison to a proper foldable screen, which offers a 7,6-inch diagonal screen real estate that's much larger in use than that number looks.
Watching videos, browsing photos, browsing websites, and reading e-books just feels superior on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Yes, it's an extra hassle to fold it up, and the extra weight and bulk in my pocket are not ideal. But it's a price I'm surprisingly happy to pay for the extra screen real estate.
And of course the cover screen could be a bit wider. But once you get used to it, it's fine for checking messages or typing a quick message; there's an argument that it's easier to use one-handed than the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

However, more than the screen, it is what the Galaxy Z Fold 3 represents that holds my attention. It may not have the fastest chip or the best cameras – its cameras are still very good for the most part – but it has more advanced technology than the Galaxy S22 Ultra or many other Android phones from foreground. The folding mechanism is simply lovely in terms of design and feel, and the use of an under-display camera is also remarkable.
Of course, both are ready for improvement, as is the Galaxy Z Fold lineup in general. But that changes what you can expect from a smartphone both now and in the future. It's also the only foldable phone that's polished enough that I'm starting to feel like foldables are the future, rather than a niche for tech fans with deep pockets.
By comparison, the Galaxy S22 Ultra feels more like a well-polished, semi-nostalgic look at the near past than a real step forward.
For this reason, I increasingly find myself passing some excellent Android phones and beyond the stellar S22 Ultra for its foldable stablemate. And I can't wait to see what the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 can bring to the foldable phone table.
