Samsung has a March 17 launch for a new line of Galaxy A phones, but one of the devices we're likely to see there has already gone on sale and it looks like it could be a real alternative to the Samsung Galaxy A. iPhone SE 3.
Although not yet announced, the Samsung Galaxy A53 is available to buy right now in Kenya, Vietnam and Serbia. This limited availability means you probably won't find it in your local phone shop just yet, but it does mean we know exactly what the specs of the handset are.
These include a 6,52-inch display, the as-yet-unreleased Exynos 1200 chipset, 4mAh battery, 500MP main camera, 64MP ultra-wide, 12MP macro, and sensor depth of 5 MP.
The Samsung Galaxy A53 is also listed as having a 32 MP front camera, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and 5G support. You can also take a look at the phone in the unboxing video below.
On paper, it looks like a solid assortment of mid-range specs, and indeed, it's probably quite a cheap phone, with its price in Kenya being KSH45 (around $500/£400 / AU$300). Price conversions won't be exact, but it might land for something in this stage.
That would mean it massively undermines the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S22 as you'd expect, but the Galaxy A53 still packs a quad-lens camera, a decent amount of RAM, and 5G, so it might end up being a good alternative for budget buyers.
Analysis: the alternative to Samsung's iPhone SE 3
The Samsung Galaxy A53 could also work as an iPhone SE 3 alternative for buyers who prefer an Android phone.
Based on the prices above, it's likely to cost a similar amount, if not slightly less, as the iPhone SE 3 starts at $429 / £419 / AU$719.
Apple's phone has a faster chipset, but it only has a single rear camera, a likely smaller battery, less RAM, a more dated design and half the storage in its starting size. It also has a smaller screen (which can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want).
Indeed, the difference in screen size means the Samsung Galaxy A53 won't appeal to fans of compact phones the way the iPhone SE 3 will, but both handsets have solid specs, 5G and a mid-range price. , so on that front they could be real competitors.
