DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Zimperium, the only mobile security platform purpose-built for enterprise environments, today released its 2022 Global Mobile Threat Report revealing new data and comprehensive analysis of the state of mobile security in the world. With statistics from Zimperium's global install base of enterprise customers, new survey data exposing the mindset and priorities of enterprise security professionals, and a chronicle of mobile threats most prevalent and third-party threat data from 2021, this report is an in-depth assessment of the current state of the mobile threat landscape.
In 2021, the Zimperium zLabs team discovered threats affecting 10 million mobile devices in at least 214 countries. Mobile malware was the most prevalent threat, encountered by nearly 1 in 4 mobile devices in Zimperium's global customer base. Throughout the year, the zLabs team detected 2 new mobile malware samples in the wild, which equates to an average of nearly 034 new malware strains per week and more than 217 per day.
In addition to the factual data presented, the report also includes valuable commentary and analysis from security industry leaders, including members of Zimperium's leadership team, representatives from SentinelOne, Ping Identity and Intertrust, as well as Malcolm Harkins, the chief security officer and trusted agent at Epiphany Systems.
“In just two years, our work environment has become far more complex and sophisticated than it was at the start of 2020. Distributed and hybrid workforces, always-on devices, high-speed 5G connectivity throughput and increased access to critical data from remote locations has propelled businesses around the world,” said Shridhar Mittal, CEO of Zimperium. “This level of mobile connectivity will be the expectation of workers, customers and businesses for decades to come, but today's cybersecurity was not designed to support these environments – and attackers know it. . Organizations need to find a way to effectively secure this new reality, and this research will provide critical visibility and insights to make that happen.
Combine a mountain of mobile threat data for complete visibility
Zimperium's Global Mobile Threat Report combines data from its global install base of enterprise customers with insights from surveys commissioned by Zimperium via Pulse – an exclusive community of verified technology makers – which are published publicly in the report for the first time. For additional context, the report underpins this new information with existing market data and statements from other public sources to provide the most comprehensive account of the current mobile threat landscape and the growing threat posed by mobile attacks.
According to Google, exploited zero-day vulnerabilities used in active attacks against mobile devices skyrocketed in 2021 by 466% year-over-year. Additionally, new data from Zimperium demonstrates the growing threat posed by different mobile attack vectors, such as phishing. From 2019 to 2021, Zimperium analyzed over 500 phishing sites and found that the number of mobile-specific phishing websites increased by 000%. Additionally, in 50, 2021% of Zimperium phishing sites scanned specifically targeted mobile devices.
Over the past two years, attackers have also shown increasing sophistication in their methods of executing phishing attacks. For example, the percentage of phishing sites using HTTPS has steadily increased from less than 40% in 2019 to almost 60% in 2021, making it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish these sites from those who are legitimate.
Global Threat Breakdown: Mobile Attack Methods by Region
While the report provides a comprehensive, global overview of the current state of mobile threats, it also dissects the data to show differences in regional environments. This shows how savvy attackers adapt the tactics they use based on the mobile environment and perceived vulnerabilities in different regions.
Zimperium's data, including all threats and risks detected and prevented among enterprise customers, reveals the pervasiveness of different tactics around the world, giving organizations valuable insight into regional landscapes.
For example:
-
In North America, the top tactics used by attackers closely mirrored global averages with 22% of mobile devices encountering malware in 2021, compared to 23% globally. Man in the middle attacks were the second most common vector, affecting 13% of devices and matching the global average.
-
In Asia, 26% of mobile devices encountered malicious websites in 2021, making users more than twice as likely to be targeted by malicious sites as the global average (12%). Additionally, at least 1 in 4 enterprise mobile devices fell victim to at least one phishing attack in 2021.
-
At a time Europe et Amerique du Sud19% of mobile users have encountered network reconnaissance through scans, potentially revealing critical data on their devices, compared to only 12% of devices that have undergone scans globally.
Overall, data from Zimperium's Global Mobile Threat 2022 report shows the diversity of risks, threats and attacks targeting mobile devices globally. Mobile malware continues to dominate the threat landscape, acting as the most effective and efficient method to attack, compromise and steal mobile devices. Network-based attacks are also incredibly effective and prominent, leveraging the great differentiator of the mobile phone – the ability to be always connected.
With the increase in the number of remote and distributed workers and clients, enterprises must prepare for and protect against an ever-changing threat landscape based on where their employees, applications and data reside in the world. world. The modern attack surface has grown and business threats continue to be widespread and effective against unsecured devices.
