Western drama "The Power of the Dog" won other major film awards two weeks before the Oscars and is a favorite at the Academy Awards on March 27.
At Sunday's British Film Awards, known as the Baftas, 'The Power of the Dog' (available in Streaming on Netflix) won Best Picture and director Jane Campion, 67, received the Bafta for Directing. With four awards, the western drama was also the big winner of the "Critics Choice Awards" on Sunday in Los Angeles. The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, tells the story of two brothers in rural Montana in the 1920s. Campion recently won the Golden Globe for Best Director.
The Power of the Dog won Best Picture, Jane Campion Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography at the Critics Choice Association (CCA) Critics Choice Awards. Campion had already won the main prize at the Directors Guild of America awards on Saturday.
The CCA awarded Will Smith the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for "King Richard." Jessica Chastain received the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about the wife of a famous televangelist.
Kenneth Branagh's Northern Ireland family story "Belfast" received three awards: Best Cast Member, Best Child or Teen Actor and Best Original Screenplay. The best comedy was “Licorice Pizza”. The Critics Choice Awards also awards prizes in the television categories. Here, as with many other awards in recent months, the long-running hit "Succession" about a dysfunctional family dynasty won Best Drama and the football series "Ted Lasso" won Best Comedy Series.
