The real story behind The Swimmers
Yusra and Sarah Mardini were just teenagers when they had to leave their home in Damascus, Syria, to seek a better future far from the bombardments. The road was not easy. While the sisters now keep a low profile, in 2017 they spoke with Spindrift about how their lives as swimmers managed to save the lives of a large group of people, during the dangerous flight from their country.

“We use our legs and one arm each, hold the rope with the other, and kick and kick. The waves kept coming and hitting me in the eyes. That was the hardest part, the salt water sting. But what were we going to do? Let them all drown? We were shooting and swimming to save their lives,” they recall.

Meanwhile, Sarah has decided to put sports aside and helping refugees through an NGO in Greece. In 2018, she was arrested with two companions. She was charged with immigrant smuggling, espionage and money laundering. She spent over three months in jail and was released on bail.. His case is still under investigation.
The parents and younger sister of the Mardini family managed to leave Syria in 2016 and arrive in Germany the same year.. Currently they live in Berlin.
