Hackers caused disruption in Moscow on September 1, with massive ride orders through the YandexTaxi app creating a traffic jam in a high-traffic area of the Russian capital.
On Thursday, visitors heading to Kutuzovsky Prospekt in Russia encountered a traffic jam. While not normally out of the ordinary for the world's second most congested city, the incident was actually caused by hackers abusing a ride-sharing app.
Hackers ordered dozens of rides using Yandex Taxi greeting app, reports Vice, with the army of yellow cars tasked with taking rides from one location, all at the same time. The order resulted in a traffic jam that slowed down other traffic.
A Yandex spokesperson confirmed that there was "an attempt by attackers to disrupt the service". It is claimed that "several dozen drivers received bulk orders in Moscow's Fili district", a main thoroughfare outside the city center.
The spokesperson added that the jam was cleared "in less than an hour", after the app's security teams "stopped attempts to artificially congest cars and improved the algorithm for detecting and prevention of such attacks in order to avoid similar incidents in the future”.
Although there has been no official confirmation of the group behind the attack, hacktivist group Anonymous claimed via Twitter that it was working with a hacktivist group known as IT Army of Ukraine.
While this is an inconvenience to drivers around town for a relatively brief period of time, it at least proves the real possibilities of abuse of seemingly inconsequential apps for potentially malicious reasons that could impact the everyday life.
