Is what 'The Crown' says about Prince Philip true? 2:41
(CNN) Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench has accused Netflix's British royal family series The Crown of 'gross sensationalism' and called the show 'grossly unfair', in a letter to Britain's The Times newspaper published this week on Thursday.
Dench asked Netflix to tell its viewers at the start of the show that the show was a "fictional drama". The move, Dench said, would be a sign of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
“No one believes in artistic freedom more than I do, but that cannot go unnoticed. Although it was publicly stated this week that The Crown has always been a "fictional drama", the show's creators have resisted all calls to include a disclaimer at the start of each episode," said Dench.
“Now is the time for Netflix to reconsider…as a sign of respect for a sovereign who has served her people so diligently for 70 years,” the actress demanded.
The final series of The Crown will present "an inaccurate and hurtful retelling of history", particularly for viewers overseas, Dench continued in the letter to The Times.
CNN has contacted Netflix for comment.
