How exactly are you guaranteed to pay and get from Big Magenta?
If you are a current T-Mobile subscriber and may be considering a change in service plans, please be aware that your rights as a customer will be affected by a drastic change to certain terms and conditions. Even if you're just jumping on board, you might want to watch when you add new lines to your account.
The changes relate to Price Lock, a cost guarantee that took effect April 28, and the program it replaced called Un-contract that the carrier launched in 2015. Internal documents as published by The T-Mo Report show that the two policies are substantially nearly identical: primarily, that subscribers will never pay more — perhaps even pay less — than the originally advertised price of their chosen plan while they're on it. Of course, the promise did not apply to external costs such as non-data related add-on features, taxes, fees, equipment and other things. This is no longer the case for Un-contract or Price Lock. Starting last Thursday, adding a new line will cost new and existing customers the currently advertised price, not the price charged from when they originally opened their account. This gets tricky if you're on an outdated plan like T-Mobile ONE, Simply Unlimited, or even one from Sprint, pre-merger - prices for new lines vary by service level and there seem to be corresponding tips on how to reconcile them between the old plans and the current plans. That said, the warranty ensures that customers won't pay more than that price for the extra line.
Price Lock also opens up the possibility of a future where T-Mobile could drop its price guarantee, noting that if customers "migrate to a new plan not covered by Price Lock, they will lose Price Lock." This may be the case with the Base Essentials plan which recently debuted. Additionally, the policy not only locks in the price of the plan, but also specifically locks in the ability to access “an AutoPay rebate” – which makes it seem like the amount can change at any time – as well as the quantity. of data that customers can use before being restricted or subject to traffic management policies, if any.
