Colin Farrell is quickly becoming a movie darling for the platforms of Streaming. Not only should he resume his role as The Batman in a spin-off series on the Penguin for HBO Max, but Farrell will also be spreading the creative love elsewhere on the spectrum of Streaming, as he is currently signed on to direct an upcoming series for Apple TV+ called Sugar. The studio clearly has high hopes for the new show, as SugarThe growing cast of has added veterans of two of television's greatest modern efforts: Breaking Bad. et You better call Saul.
Anna Gunn, best known for playing Skyler White on AMC's hit Breaking Bad.is one of many top notch additions to this already stacked cast, and according to Variety, she will be joined by Dennis Boutsikaris, who played attorney Rick Schweikart in You better call Saul. Both actors know a thing or two about standing out among the surrounding talent, and while we don't yet know much about how they'll fit into the story, neither Gunn nor Boutsikaris are likely to disappoint.

The plot for the upcoming series is currently under lock and key, but Sugar is said to be a modern detective show set in Los Angeles that offers a fresh take on the familiar genre. Farrell is an executive producer on the project, with Mark Protosevich, who will also serve as writer, and Fernando Meirelles, who is expected to direct. Protosevich has garnered attention for his work on Marvel's Thorand Meirelles is best known for directing the Oscar-nominated films City of God et The Two Popes.
Also joining the cast of Sugar is James Cromwell who received an Emmy nomination this year for his performance on HBO's Succession. These new actors will join a previously announced cast that includes Barry star Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Oscar-nominated actress Amy Ryan, who recently returned to television for Hulu's Only Murders in the Building.
Colin Farrell has taken a particular interest in working with auteur directors such as Meirelles over the years. He landed arguably a starring role in his career in 2008 In Bruges directed by acclaimed playwright Martin McDonagh, who some cite as saving his career from a string of box office er-do-wells, and he'll be back with McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson for The Banshees of Inisherin Later this year.
Apple TV+ has invested in plenty of thrillers and mysteries like Sugar to add to their catalog of shows. Black bird starring Taron Egerton and the late Ray Liotta created a lot of buzz for the streamer and the Ben-Stiller-led series Rend has an incredible presence at the Emmys this year. AppleTV+ will need to continue to grow its repertoire if it wants to compete with Disney+, the service of Streaming now dominant, which has surpassed Netflix in the number of global subscribers this month. Only time will tell if Sugar will be the show that will help push Apple TV+ higher up the list, but having a cast full of A+ talent never hurts.
