A British scammer who appeared in a Netflix documentary and was wanted in France after injuring two police officers while fleeing a raid has been arrested in Belgium, police said on Saturday.
Robert Hendy Freegard, a 51-year-old former waiter, had been on the run since late August when he hit two officers with his Audi A3 in a remote town in central France before fleeing.
Earlier this year, he was the subject of a three-part documentary on Netflix, The PuppetThe Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman.
He was arrested on Friday near Brussels and was due to appear before a judge later on Saturday, a Belgian federal police spokesman told AFP.
Freegard had illegally bred dogs and occasionally lived in Vidaillat, central France, since 2015, according to local authorities.
On August 25, French labor and animal rights inspectors showed up at his home with police officers to examine the scene, but Hendy Freegard started his vehicle and ran over two officers before driving off at full speed.
Both were injured and one had to be hospitalized for a nose injury.
Freegard faces charges of attempted murder of a public official, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
The con man was nicknamed "The Puppeteer" for his ability to exercise control over his victims.
In 2005, a London court sentenced him to life in prison for deception, theft and kidnapping in an extraordinary trial that heard from seven people whose money he used to enjoy luxury cars and vacations.
The kidnapping charges were later overturned on appeal, for which he was released from prison in 2009.
In the Netflix documentary, the children of a woman believed to be his current partner, Sandra Clifton, said he was missing.
In February, a retired couple who live near the house saw the documentary, recognized it and contacted their daughter online.
