Former Metallica guitarist Jason Newsted recently spoke with Palm Beach Post for an extensive interview.
Along with candid discussions of his time with Metallica, his paintings and his new Chophouse Band, Newsted offhandedly mentioned at one point that he was approached by Alex Van Halen and Joe Satriani to take part in – Palm Beach Post reports – sort of a Van Halen tour.
The interview does not specify whether said tour would have been entirely under the Van Halen name, or just a Van Halen tribute tour, but talks would have gone far enough for Newsted to travel to California to perform with Van Halen and Satriane.
According to Poster however, Newsted felt it would be impossible to do justice to Van Halen's legacy.
" How can you? says Newsted. "There's no one who can top him, so how do you show him honor?" I didn't want it to be seen as a money grab. And then everything kind of fell apart.
Shortly after Eddie Van Halen's death in October 2020, Wolfgang Van Halen – who was Van Halen's bassist from 2007 until their disbandment, and now leads his own band, Mammoth WVH – said that Van Halen was definitely dissolved.
Responding to a tweet - which was later deleted - from someone asking if Wolfgang would ever reform Van Halen without his father, he wrote: "I can say with confidence that I will NEVER replace my father at Van Halen and will do around the world without respecting the memory of my father. .
“No EVH = No VH. Get the hell out of there, but if you can't, stop bothering me with it and demanding that I do it when I've made it very clear how I feel.
guitar world has reached out to Joe Satriani's rep for comment.
