At least 55% of women in the US military have been sexually abused.. An internal drama which, in the main narratives relating to this country, generally goes unnoticed. The notion of homeland, the role of the police in the world and the latent spectacularity of its way of being are essential. To that problem hidden between the fireworks Interceptorthe most recent premiere of Netflix.
The film, starring Elsa pataki, as JJ Collins, tells how the United States deals with a terrorist attack from Russia. To contain it, they have two bases that function as anti-missile shields. One of them will fall, as part of the attack plan, while the other will be the focus of the fight. In this operations center is JJ Collins.
From beginning to end, Interceptor is crossed by this gender tension. JJ Collins is persecuted for her reputation: a woman capable of approaching the highest levels of the military for her abilities, until a member of a higher rank tries to abuse her. The complaint forced the dismissal of the superior but also ruined the career of the character played by Elsa Pataky. It is not only a narrative device: Il est estimated that average abuse goes up to 80%only not all women can file a complaint.
Interceptor,
sexism and the notion of spectacle
In this context, one of the first scenes shows Elsa Pataky removing part of her uniform, to remain, throughout the film, in an outfit similar to that which the actress wore during fast and furious. Could it be justified by an idea of entertainment? Most likely. But if you want to be consistent with the implicit complaint being raised, this detail is a failure of realization: you can't challenge gender abuse and sexualize the protagonist at the same time.
JJ Collins comes across as a figure capable of dealing with any threat, while the bulk of the men around him are a series of incompetents. Throughout the story, the abuse suffered by the protagonist is delved into, while the antagonistic figure Alexander, played by Luke Bracey, discovers how to break the mentality of the protagonist, going through his sexual abuse and his tensions in the military field. Can this be used to explain the revictimization that usually occurs in this type of case? At least it makes you think.
Meanwhile, the missiles to the United States begin to fly. This is where another of the critical values offered by Interceptor comes in: the terrorist attack is viralized through multiple smart devices. The reaction? A part of American society remains to be watched. Yet another show they have access to, even if it involves destroying twelve of their cities. The climax of the parody is represented by Chris Hemsworthwho is part of the production team, and plays a store clerk who follows the drama as if it were a reality show.
Elsa pataki embodies a military woman haunted by her past, marked by sexual abuse. In this context, she appears as the only figure capable of stopping a terrorist threat that could affect twelve cities in the United States. The film evokes productions like the saga hard to kill. Although it has a series of weaknesses that undermine its critical message to American society.

The plausibility problem
Interceptor It's an action movie that tries to have a genre perspective, to the point of criticizing several layers of American society. We see it through the character of Elsa Pataky but also in who occupies the White House: a woman; or how the country treats its veterans or tackles racism and xenophobia. But, among so many searches, there are leaks and many conveniences.
Is this the first Netflix movie that has amenities? No. Nor will it be the last within this platform or others. A part of cinema feeds on it because it is an art that feeds on the possibilities of the scriptwriters' imagination. This possibility is shattered when creativity overlooks credibility or the building of the atmosphere necessary for arguments, ideas and bets to be convincing.
How is it possible that Alexander, without knowing that JJ Collins would be transferred to this base he attacked, had access to all of his history? How was the attack on JJ Collins' father coordinated? How is it possible that a terrorist attack planned for six years, consisting of the activation of a series of missiles, can take so long in a story? The cinema and its potential, although here they are poorly exploited.
Elsa Pataky is her own version of hard to kill while Luc Bracey appears as a villain with no background other than economic interest. Interceptor can accompany a moment of the weekend, or even provide a few entertaining moments. But it might not be the movie you want to talk about for hours. La film is available on Netflix from June 3.
