A feature people have been asking for for years
Reposts, in a way, have always been present on Instagram. But so far there is no official way to "repost" something. You can capture someone else's post, crop it, and upload it as your own, or you can use one of many third-party repost apps. But as far as an official repost feature goes, we haven't had anything like it. Instagram wants to change that, however.
The Meta-owned company confirmed to TechCrunch that the app will soon begin testing a new repost feature. In an email to the publication, a spokesperson for Meta said that “we are exploring the possibility of re-sharing posts in Feed – in the same way that you can re-share in Stories – so that people can share what resonates. with them, and thus the original creators are credited for their work. They also added that "we plan to test this soon with a small number of people."

The feature was previously spotted as a work in progress by social media and engineering maven Matt Navarra. If the final form of the reposts resembles what he found, the reposts will appear as their own separate tab on a user's profile and will presumably be treated differently in the app than the original self-uploaded posts.
Having an official repost feature will eliminate the need to use third-party apps. They've been around for years and are often filled with obnoxious full-screen ads, so the less users need to download them, the better for everyone.
TikTok recently added a "repost" feature that lets you re-share videos with your followers, but they don't appear on your profile. It's likely that the Instagram equivalent will work the same way. Third-party repost apps copy a post's image and caption and re-upload it to your profile with a watermark. It seems to be less invasive than that.
The test should be rolling out to random users in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out to see if you get it.
