Living rooms or home theater? Bardo, false chronicle of some truths, Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest film arrived in Venice surrounded by controversy. At a time when many are fighting to maintain the cinemas of a lifetime, while the platforms are inexorably penetrating homes little by little and with the intention of staying there, the Mexican director has brought to the Mostra a film produced by Netflix, which will also distribute the platform and which can be seen in traditional theaters for seven weeks.

Iñárritu did not hesitate to make an ardent defense of Netflix: “We are all destined for television, telephones and soon perhaps even invisible screens”, says the director of the Oscar winner birdman. The filmmaker insists on the fact that if he was able to meet the classic filmmakers, "it is thanks to television and these old VHS tapes that I still keep, but which today no one would watch anymore because of the poor image quality.
It is very clear that thanks to Netflix he was able to make a risky and somewhat dreamlike three-hour film, in which Daniel Giménez Cacho plays a journalist and documentary filmmaker who, after living for a few decades in the United States, returns to the Mexico to confront his memories with his present and also reflect on immigration, drug trafficking, inequalities, the Spanish conquest and other situations that affect his country.

Iñárritu composes the puzzle of this Mexico that worries him so much through very diverse pieces. It addresses the inequality between the rich Mexicans, free to travel, and the poor, doomed to illegality, through a conversation between the protagonist and his son. He evokes the evils of the Spanish conquest in a fictional conversation between the journalist and Hernán Cortés. He immerses himself in the drug trade through an interview in prison with the leader of a cartel and presents a migratory caravan with images from one of the documentaries shot by his character.

A non-commercial cinema that may be a risky bet for Netflix, but which could pay off, for now Daniel Giménez Cacho's performance has already been widely applauded and his name has entered the pools to win the Coppa Volpi du best actor . We will have to wait and see how far the film has come without forgetting that Iñárritu is an old acquaintance of the Oscars since he was also nominated for Dog likes, Babel, Biutiful Yes reborn.
