The film Evil spell hit theaters in Taiwan in March and has been described as the "scariest Taiwanese film of all time", as reported by The Hollywood Reporter (THR). The film will be released on Netflix on July 8.
Inspired by a true story involving a family of cult worshipers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the film was shot in a mockumentary style interspersed with found footage and actors breaking the fourth wall to address the audience.
The IMDb synopsis heeds the following caveat: “This is a cursed video, it may contain some risks to watch; For those who dare to continue, please solve my daughter's curse puzzle with me. »
"I'm really proud that Evil spell premieres on Netflix globally, maximizing the number of people who can watch it,” said Kevin Ko, screenwriter, producer and director of Evil spell at THR. "It's always been my dream to make films that travel the world and are seen by every horror fan on earth, keeping them up at night. I can't wait to hear the reactions of viewers. »
According to Netflix, between 2020 and 2021, audiences for sci-fi and horror on the platform in the Asia-Pacific region grew by 30% and 20% respectively.
Evil spell belongs to the genre of "found footage" or mockumentaries, stories in which a personal videotape appears showing how a group of people went missing or were killed. A particularly popular subgenre in the late 90s and early 2000s, as it does not require too much of a budget and has managed to reap fortunes on several occasions, as in the case of The Blair Witch Projectwhich, with a budget of no more than $500, grossed over $000 million at the worldwide box office.
