Neither "13 Reasons Why" nor "Euphoria" nor “Sex Education”—three of the most talked about teen shows in recent years—features real teenagers as protagonists (Zendaya is 26 and still playing a 17-year-old girl!). Only in this aspect, which I confess makes me problematic, "Heartstopper" has an advantage over them. Well, at the request of Alice Oseman, the author of the comic of the same name on which this series is based, the actors and actresses could not exceed the age of majority to give more realism to The fiction.

And did the boy succeed. Because in this story of young people struggling with the natural insecurities of sexuality, love and friendship, are its protagonists who give it a particular and honest grace. In particular the duo composed of Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who play Nicky and Charlie, two boys who fall in love as part of a British high school.
“Heartstopper” is charming because, under the usual canons of youth romance drama, it manages to avoid the mundane dynamic and manages to approach with ease a love story that seems convincing. It does so by going through stages, tackling cross-cutting themes – bullying or family problems – and also betting on a neat cinematic quality, which combines the warmth of its lighting and its color palette with very subtle touches of animation, adapted from the original graphic novel.

In this way, other aspects of the series could continue to stand out: its soundtrack, tacky and well calibrated; the formation of a solid cast, which even has the participation of a luxury secondary like Olivia Colman; and a script of endearing transparency, in which even 'smartphone' messaging looks intimate and emotionalcompletely in phase with the virtualized dimension of these “centenarians” in love.
Finally, it is of course worth highlighting its very plausible and necessary LGTB+ representation among such a young audience. And yet, the romantic workings of the story are effective beyond any gender or diversity labels. After all, as they say, love is love. That's what matters.
