Big Star and Guided By Voices are two of the most important and influential guitar-pop bands in underground rock history. Today the latter paid tribute to the former with a new single. Five minutes long and comprising several unrepeated sections, it almost feels like several GBV songs stitched together.
“Alex Bell” takes its title from Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the genius songwriters who steered Big Star through three cult classic albums in the 1970s. to any of those albums, even though it also contains a lot of signature Robert Pollard swagger. "I see you every time there's a ghost in town," Pollard sings at the song's finale.
“Alex Bell” will be accompanied by another new track called “Look Out For The Flock” on an upcoming 7″. Listen to the A-side below via Brooklyn Vegan and let us know how it compares to the ultimate Big Star tribute song, "Alex Chilton" from The Replacements.
"Alex Bell" b/w "Look Out For The Flock" was released 9/30 on Pollard's Rockathon Records.
