The ongoing aggression between Russia and Ukraine has escalated over the months, with Russian troops showing no signs of letting up in their quest to overrun Kyiv. Given the atrocities committed by Russia since its President Vladimir Putin declared a special military operation in eastern Ukraine on February 24, several major companies have withdrawn from the country in protest against the regiment.
The Swedish platform of Streaming audio and media services Spotify has extended its support to the war-stricken country by closing its Russian offices indefinitely. They continued to provide services with the aim of sharing reliable information with the population. However, the new media law posed a threat to the platform of Streaming and its employees which compelled them to suspend their services of Streaming.
Spotify suspends service in Russia amid Ukraine invasion
According to a report by Deadline, Spotify released a statement to announce that it has decided to suspend its services in Russia in response to the new media law. Addressing its previous decision to continue its service in Russia, Spotify wrote in the statement: "Spotify continued to believe that it is extremely important to try to keep our service operational in Russia to provide reliable and independent news and information. of the region ".
However, the platform believed that the new media law firm could potentially endanger the lives of its employees as well as those of its listeners. They further wrote: “Unfortunately, recently enacted legislation further restricting access to information, eliminating free speech and criminalizing certain types of information puts the safety of Spotify employees and even the ability to our listeners. »
According to the outlet, a person with knowledge of the development believes that services will be suspended in early April. Meanwhile, it has not been revealed how Spotify plans to refund users after their service is suspended.
