Many of us are under the impression that deleting search history in browser ensures privacy and security. What we don't realize is that Google also tracks our activity, and when trying to delete their search history, many users have encountered an error.
Google uses search history to display personalized ads to users. While seeing personalized ads doesn't seem like a big deal, knowing that your searches are being saved and accessed later is a major concern for many.
If you don't want your searches saved either, here's how you can delete Google search history.
How can I delete Google search history?
- Launch any reliable and secure browser, navigate to the Activity Controls section on your Google accountand click Manage all web and app activity.
- Now click on the Clear button below Find your activity.
- Finally, select the time interval for which you want to delete the Google search history in the computer.
- Data within the selected time range will be automatically deleted.
This will remove your search history from all Google products, including Chrome, Gmail, Maps, News, and Translate, among others. If you want to remove one or more, add them to the filter and then proceed with the removal.
Remember that deleting your search history does not necessarily mean that it is immediately deleted from Google's servers. Although it is no longer used to display personalized advertisements.
What should I do if Google won't delete search history?
1. Try again from time to time
If you regularly clear Google search history and encounter the problem for the first time, it might be a temporary issue with the server. Or you might have problems with your internet connection. Try restarting your computer and modem/router.
Regardless of the underlying cause, it's always best to wait a while in these cases and then try again. If Google still won't delete your search history, please move on to the next method.
2. Log back into your Google account
- Go to Google, click on your profile picture (or the alphabet if you haven't added a picture), then select disconnect from the menu.
- Then click on Recording button near the top right corner.
- Now enter your Google account details to login.
In some cases, logging out and then logging back in to the Google Account resolved the issue. This is usually due to a trivial bug that has been leaked, which a new login would easily remove.
Once done, Google search history not clearing issue should be fixed.
3. Use a dedicated VPN
If the two methods listed above did not work, you should use a dedicated and reliable VPN. Indeed, the problem probably lies in the connection configuration, and using an effective VPN would eliminate it.
Other than that, VPNs offer many other benefits, the most important being their ability to hide the identity of the user. Also, these can help you bypass geo-blocking when connecting to a server in another country.
How to set Google search history to be deleted automatically?
- Go to the Activity Controls section on your Google account and click Choose an automatic removal option below Web and App Activity.
- Select the Automatically delete activities older than option, choose the desired duration from the drop-down menu, then click following basically.
- Now click on To confirm to save changes. Also, recorded activities older than the selected duration will be deleted immediately.
From now on, Google will automatically delete your search history and you don't have to worry about it. However, you can always delete it manually at any time.
The methods listed here, although illustrated for a Windows PC, work on all devices and may also prevent Google from deleting search history on Android ou iPhone.
Also, learn what to do if you find unknown searches in your Google search history, as this could be a sign of an account breach.
