– Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are too expensive? There will soon be an alternative: Freevee, another Streaming, will launch in Germany later this year – and it's even free.
If you don't want to miss the latest series and movies or the most successful titles on the platforms of Streaming – for example Squid Game – you have to dig deep into your pocket: the offers are usually not cheap. But soon there will be an alternative with which a movie or series marathon is also possible for free: The new Amazon Freevee offer will be launched in Germany this year.
What is Freevee?
Most people don't know the name Freevee – which isn't surprising. Because Amazon's service is currently known as "IMDb TV." That will soon change: Starting April 27, 2022, IMDb TV will be called Amazon Freevee, according to a press release. But how is the service financed if not by user fees?
The answer is: through advertising revenue. The service makes its content available free of charge, including more and more internal productions. The edge reports on Freevee's "vision for the future", which is described by the head of the service, Ashraf Alkarmi: So it should be a complementary platform. This is intended to appeal to consumers who want to see “premium” series and films with far fewer commercial breaks. The service of Streaming Free already exists in the US and Britain – “this year” it will come to Germany, they say.
What to expect
In the United States in particular, IMDb TV has become increasingly popular over the past two years – according to the operator, the number of monthly active users has tripled. According to Amazon, the reason is the rapid spread of the service through smart TVs and mobile devices. There should also be licensed content – but the service of Streaming still mainly relies on its own productions: these include “Bosch: Legacy” or a comedy series called “Jump”. The range of in-house productions is also to be increased – by 70% by the end of the year.
The success of the service now depends on how the program is received by users. The company has yet to announce a specific date for the Germany launch – that remains to be seen.
