Apple has partnered with Disney affiliate ESPN to offer sports fans the ability to co-watch live sports games with friends and family. Distance is no longer a barrier for those longing to have an ESPN viewing companion.
With Apple's beloved SharePlay and FaceTime features, ESPN fans can cheer on their favorite players — and taunt the opposing team — while loved ones watch in sync via video conferencing and picture-in-picture mode.
"By adding SharePlay support to the ESPN app, we're giving fans a live sports co-watching experience for the first time," said Brian Marshall, vice president of sports products and strategy. from Disney, in a press release. “We are thrilled to provide a unique opportunity for friends and family to come together to support some of their favorite teams. »
If you're a sports enthusiast, you might be wondering how to put this new feature to the test. Check out the step-by-step instructions below to enjoy shared viewing experiences with other sports enthusiasts.
How to use the SharePlay-supported ESPN app to watch live games with friends
Before you create a shared streaming session with an ESPN viewer friend, you need to have the following:
- An active ESPN account with a subscription to an eligible television provider. ESPN+ subscribers can also access it.
- A supported iOS or iPadOS device running version 15.1 or later.
- ESPN app must be installed and updated
Once you've set up your requirements, here's how you can start a SharePlay session to co-watch live ESPN matches.
1. On your iPhone or iPad, initiate a FaceTime call.
2. Swipe from the bottom edge of the FaceTime call.
3. Open the ESPN app.
4. Choose the event you want to watch with your viewing partner (for example, an ESPN+ Original or a live game). Faucet To play.
5. If prompted, press Share Play.
If a SharePlay prompt doesn't appear, don't worry. The update is gradually rolling out to the public; it should reach 100% of ESPN users by the end of the week.
It should be noted that short clips and replays of ESPN are not supported. For ESPN+ pay-per-view content (e.g. UFC), each attendee must purchase the event before anyone can co-watch in sync.
SharePlay sessions can include up to 32 people and the feature is only available to US residents.
