Donald Fagen has denied Aimee Mann's claim that she was dropped as the opening act for Steely Dan's new tour because, as she surmised, "they thought their audience wouldn't like a songwriter- songwriter ".
In a statement to Rolling stone, Fagen explained, “Well, first of all, the idea that I would make a decision based on an artist's gender is ridiculous. It's something that wouldn't even occur to me. »

Fagen also noted that singer-songwriters like Phoebe Snow and Rickie Lee Jones had opened for Steely Dan in the past.
On Instagram on Wednesday, Mann, a self-proclaimed Dan fan, posted a comic about his withdrawal from the Steely Dan tour; when the trek was announced, Mann and Snarky Puppy were signed on as the opening act, replacing Steve Winwood.
“I was supposed to open for Steely Dan this summer. Just found out they took the bill off me,” Mann wrote in the comic captions. “No one knows exactly why, but it seems they thought their audience wouldn't like a singer-songwriter? Steely Dan happens to be the only band that I like 100%, wholeheartedly, so it really sucks. But you know what? People have the right to dislike you, for whatever reason.
However, Fagen explained on Thursday: “There was a communication problem on our end. I was misinformed as to the firmness of commitment to a particular opening act. And, while I have the utmost respect for Aimee as a writer and performer, I thought that might not be the best combination in terms of musical style.
Fagen also apologized to Mann for the miscommunication, adding: “But I can't return the ball. I'll take the blame for the shit. I apologize for any distress this has caused Aimee and her fans.

A Mann representative said Rolling stone of the Steely Dan situation, “His illustration says it all. Mann seemed to take the mess in good spirits, joking on Twitter Wednesday night - before Fagen's statement - "All is forgiven if Donald just tells me what 'Brooklyn' is about." The singer will also embark on her own headlining tour next month.
