In his most recent project, he joined Camila Mendes for the film 'Do Revenge', which in its opening weekend became number 1 trending on Netflix in the United States.
The film follows Drea and Eleanor, two high school girls who forge a close relationship despite not having much in common. What unites them is their desire to get revenge on other students who have hurt them in the past.
'Do Revenge', Netflix movie', has several references to 90s classics
When Maya Hawke's character enters Rosehill High School, Gabbi (played by Talia Ryder) asks her if she would like a tour of the school, to which she replies:
“As a follower of 90s movies, I would be offended if I didn't have it. »
This is the most obvious and clearest reference to the hits of the decade of the last century, but it is not the only one.
Netflix Movie 'Do Revenge' Pays Tribute to 'Clueless'
One eye-catching item are the student uniforms at Rosehill, which are plaid, with pastel colors and jackets layered over the shoulders.
It's, as director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told Tudum, a nod to the look of "Clueless."
While this detail might go unnoticed (or be mistaken for the costumes in 'Grease,' as Vanity Fair noted), there's another much more direct element to the film starring Alicia Silverstone: the hallway where the protagonists attend the course is called Horowitz, surname by Cher.
There was also a reference to 'Heathers'
In 'Do Revenge', the sport is present when Drea visits Carissa in a rehabilitation center and the latter practices it.
'Do Revenge' has a very similar scene to '10 Things I Hate About You'
Drea and Russ kiss for the first time in her art studio, after a painting battle.
The tape director revealed to Netflix that she included this scene as a tribute to "10 Things I Hate About You" and that the screenwriter of the 90s classic gave her "his blessing" for the nod.
A 'Cruel Intentions' actress appeared in 'Do Revenge'
Without a doubt, the clearest connection between the two films is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who brought Kathryn to life in the 1999 fiction.
Another of the similarities is the plot itself, of two friends who aren't really that much and go out of their way to ruin each other.
Additionally, one of the songs that sets the Netflix movie to music is “Praise You,” a Fatboy Slim song that was also part of the “Cruel Intentions” soundtrack.
According to the "Do Revenge" director, the ending, in which Drea and Eleanor skip the ball and drive off in a convertible, "is 100% a nod" to the conclusion of "Cruel Intentions."
'Mean Girls' is part of the 'Do Revenge' references
Although this film dates from 2004, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was inspired by it as in those of a decade ago.
Her clearest reference was when Drea and Eleanor posted the posts which show that Max has been unfaithful to several of his girlfriends and as a result the entire Rosehill student body is in chaos: screaming, crying and even a fire can be seen in their hallways, in true Regina George style.
