🍿 2022-09-30 20:08:24 – Paris/France.
The Uruguayan director shot for the first time in his native Montevideo an urban western that mainly refers to his classic a red bear.
Go (Uruguay/2022). Screenplay and production: Israel Adrián Caetano. Starring: Diego Alonso, Catalina Arrillaga, Néstor 'Tito' Prieto, Luis Alberto Acosta, Marcos Da Costa, Joel Alva13, José Pagano, Federico Morosini and Sabrina Valiente. Photography: Juan Manuel Apolo. Edition: Agustin Fagetti Methol. Art direction: Clara Rodríguez. Duration: 95 minutes. Available on Netflix from Wednesday 5 October.
Two decades ago, Israel Adrián Caetano created a red bear, in which El Oso (Julio Chávez) tried, after his release from prison, to rebuild (create) the relationship with his eight-year-old daughter. Just over a decade ago, the same director was shooting France, also with a school-aged girl as the owner of the point of view. In 2017 it's the turn of another neo-western, the other brothertransposition of the novel Sous ce immense soleil, by Carlos Busqued.
This preamble serves to find Go, original screenplay by Caetano, his first feature film shot in his hometown of Montevideo and the first Uruguayan film produced by Netflix, links to these previous works. It's that Go it is also, in its own way, an urban western and features two father-daughter relationships (one real and one surrogate).
The Togo of the title (Diego Alonso, the squatters' chicken) is a valet (a "rag" if the story takes place in Argentina) who always drives (and lives) in the same block in the Uruguayan capital. Once a promising boxer, a car accident left him lame and -literally- on the street. To add insult to injury, her daughter is in a recovering drug shelter. The protagonist is respected by the neighbors and (survives) he lives on what the drivers tip him to park them, take care of them and possibly wash their cars.
In the midst of a seemingly unsurprising routine, two appearances will change her luck forever: first, that of Mercedes (Catalina Arrillaga), a high-class teenager who has a terrible relationship with her parents and begins to hang around more more often and longer in Togo, even while learning the details of the trade; and that of some drug traffickers who sell drugs very close to their territory and want to also appropriate the one that the protagonist exploits.
With his cane as his only weapon (and his fists which seem to have lost their power), Togo will have to face the successive attacks of the gangsters. A tough, weathered and wounded character who looks like a cross between Takeshi Kitano and Clint Eastwood, a true western (anti)hero. If the film advances without particular subtlety and chooses predictable directions, Caetano and his creatures make up for it with a tense, powerful, sometimes heartbreaking staging, in which emerges an initially contained sensitivity, a muted lyricism and this love of cinema ( genre) that we perceive in each of the shots of the films of the talented Uruguayan director.
