the universe of the mad addams returns as a series and with the teenager Merlina (Jenna Ortega) as the absolute protagonist.
Although Tim Burton filmed the first four of the eight episodes of the first season with elegance and a lot of charm (everything indicates that it will not be the only one) of MerlinDirector of Beetlejuice, Batman, Young Scissorhands, Ed Wood Yes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory He is not the showrunner of the project, a position that remained in the hands of Alfred Gough (also creator of small town). However, after the discrete experiments of Miss Peregrine and her peculiar children Yes Dumbothis commissioned work shows him in great shape.
It is not that Merlin to be a particularly surprising series (it has all the spectacular but also a lot of attachment to the usual formulas of so many large-scale Netflix productions such as Sabrina's Hidden World), but it is very likely to become one of the most viewed “content” in the coming weeks on the Red N platform.
If at the beginning we see Morticia and Homero Addams (Catherina Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán) accompanying Merlina (the former Disney girl Jenna Ortega) by car to the Nunca Más Academy, a sort of boarding school for complicated personalities (Merlina was expelled from eight schools in the past five years), they will soon say goodbye to her, but not before informing her that they also trained (and met) there.
Merlina is the typical child prodigy, brilliant, arrogant and absolutely bizarre at the same time, who always has a sarcastic answer on the tip of her tongue or a way to avenge any slight by doubling down. Not very (not at all) sociable, it will not take him long to make many enemies, but also a certain admiration for his carelessness and his intelligence.
Now without Morticia, Homer, Pericles or Largo (although with permanent help from Fingers), Merlina will have enthusiastic Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) as her roommate and, as seen in the trailer for the series, her earnings will be bloody, throwing piranhas at swimmers who dared to mock her.
The main focus of the eight episodes will be a series of murders that Merlina (and the local police, of course) will attempt to solve. There are several fantastical elements that hover over the plot, although this is essentially a story that tries to fit in with the spirit of the franchise. Harry Potter (Here there are also sides, teachers, a director like Larissa Weems very well interpreted by Gwendoline Christie and, of course, adolescent love tensions typical of any coming of age). And, in addition, a therapist named Valérie Kinbott (Riki Lindhome) will appear who will try to immerse herself in the dark spirit of our anti-heroine during successive sessions.
Much darker and with fewer comedy steps (the humor is rather dark) than Barry Sonnenfeld's films, Merlina is largely supported by the magnetism of Ortega, who loads the series perhaps with fewer nuances than the character would need it but with absolute conviction and professionalism.
Visually very neat (sometimes even dazzling), Merlin It's one of those series that can be enjoyed without demanding too much. However, for nostalgics who want to rediscover that innocent, naive, naive and decidedly effective humor that the addams family had on both TV and movies, chances are they'll feel frustrated with such a dissimilar proposition like this new series.
