iOS 16 will launch on Monday. Previewed during the WWDC 2022 keynote, it's been three months since Apple began beta testing the new iPhone operating system. Unfortunately, some of its key features will not be available at launch.
Last year, the same thing happened with several features, whether they were delayed during beta cycles or Apple simply decided they weren't ready yet. With that in mind, here are the features you shouldn't expect to see until the end of this year.
iOS 16's redesigned lock screen is for sure one of the coolest features coming with this new OS later this fall, but everything Apple previewed with it won't be available. in some months. According to the company, these two features will arrive later this year:
- Live activities: Live Activities helps you stay up to date with what's happening in real time, right from your lock screen;
- Live Activities API: Follow a sports match in progress or follow the progress of your journey or order at a glance. Take a peek at the live activities of your favorite third-party apps with the new Developer API.
Without Live Activities arriving with the first public release of iOS 16, the Application clips won't support it when the new OS launches, although it will feature an increased size limit and precise location suggestions in Spotlight and Siri Suggestions widgets.
Planned for iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, Free form – a new flexible canvas – will also be launched later this year.
With the Freeform app, users will have a canvas to diagram new projects and collaborate in real time, while chatting via iMessage or FaceTime. This whiteboard provides enough space for many people to work together while writing or drawing.
Play center will also be lacking in features when iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura launch, as these two features will require a bit more time:
- SharePlay support: Games that use Game Center's multiplayer support have SharePlay integration. You can automatically start playing with friends during a FaceTime call;
- Contact integration: Contacts displays your friends' Game Center profiles. Tap on them to see what they play and accomplish in games.
For iOS 16 and tvOS 16, Taking charge of the material won't be launched until later this year. Matter is a new smart home connectivity standard that will allow compatible accessories to work together seamlessly, across all platforms. Matter will let you choose from even more compatible smart home accessories and control them with the Home app and Siri on Apple devices.
For iPadOS 16, Focus filterwhich will be the ability to set limits in Apple apps such as Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari to draw limits for each Focus you activate, will not launch with the first version of iPadOS 16.
Finally, a few days after announcing the release date of iOS 16, Apple said that iCloud Shared Photo Library won't be available at launch, likely due to the delay of iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura. Here's how Apple describes this feature:
“iCloud Shared Photo Library offers families a new way to seamlessly share photos with a separate iCloud Library where up to six users can collaborate, contribute and enjoy. Users can choose to share existing photos from their personal libraries, or share based on a start date or people in the photos. A user can also choose to automatically send photos to the shared library using a new toggle in the Camera app. Additionally, users will receive smart suggestions for sharing a photo that includes participants in the shared photo library. Each Shared Photo Library user has access to add, delete, edit or favorite the shared photos or videos, which will appear in each user's Memories and Featured Photos so that everyone can relive more complete family moments.
iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura will also be delayed
According to Bloomberg, Apple will delay the launch of iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura by one month. Journalist Mark Gurman reports that the company is targeting an October release alongside macOS 13 Ventura.
While Apple has generally released macOS updates after other operating systems, it looks like the same will happen with iPadOS this year to make sure Stage Manager and other new features work more smoothly.

As we're only days away from the release of iOS 16, we'll likely hear more about the delayed features before the beta cycle ends. We'll be sure to update this article once we hear what other features will be delayed - hopefully not as much as iOS 15.
