what happened to Pickman's model?
Thurber was initially fascinated by Pickman's artwork, but this fascination quickly turned to fear and loathing, after seeing the artwork from Pickman's sketchbook and the apartment.
Pickman went into some brief details about her family history, particularly her ancestor Lavinia, revealing that she was an enchantress, also known as a witch, who served her husband's meat to her clan and finally burned at the stake. .
Disturbed by what he saw, Thurber leaves in a panic, but while outside he is attacked by a horse-drawn carriage carrying Lavinia's rotting corpse, only for Thurber to wake up unharmed in his bed.
Late for a party at Rebecca's family, Thurber is everywhere and keeps seeing Lavinia's corpse wandering around the garden. Rebecca, horrified and embarrassed by his behavior, thinks Thurber is drunk. Thurber struggles to explain the reasons for his behavior and leaves. He returns to Pickman's apartment to find that Pickman had already left, but a sketch of a decapitated head was left on the wall.
Seventeen years later, we discover that Thurber is still very much involved in the art world as a “trend-setter” aka curator. In the end, he married Rebecca and they had a son, James, together and a nice big house.
Thurber has a nightmare and dreams of Lavinia and her clan, eating around a dining table adorned with meat, body parts, and cockroaches. After waking up, Thurber comes downstairs and looks at the painting waiting for him in the hallway. Horrified by the painting, it doesn't take him long to put the pieces together to learn more about Pickman's work. Staring too long, he tries to stab himself in the eye before Rebecca breaks her concentration.
Unbeknownst to Thurber, James woke up in the night and saw the painting as well. We soon find out the aftermath of that night, as it is revealed that James has trouble sleeping due to nightmares caused by the painting.
One of Thurber's colleagues, Minot, reveals that he has invited Pickman and will exhibit some of his works at the gallery. Thurber is scared and tries to dissuade Minot, but is accused of being a "bad sportsman".
Arriving home, Thurber is surprised to find that Pickman is there and they are sharing dinner together. He struggles to hide his disdain for Pickman's art, and Rebecca later criticizes him for being rude. However, Thurber took Pickman's card if he wanted to see the artwork at his home.
Thurber is once again living a nightmare with Lavinia and her clan. But, his son James suffers from an equally terrifying nightmare, except something was in the room with him before he escaped.
Enraged by the news, Thurber confronts Pickman, who is shocked by the anger of his "friends". Pinkman exclaims that he appreciates Thurber's judgment and wants him to come take a look at all of his new portraits, upon his return he will leave Thurber's family alone, step down from the exhibit, and even allow Thurber to destroy his work if he still hates it, to which Thurber reluctantly agrees.
Arriving at the Pickman house, Thurber recognizes the design of the hallway, particularly the large set of double doors that lead into the dining room. Hallways are adorned with Pickman artwork. Pickman goes to the basement, but Thurber overhears him talking to someone. Thurber steps in, but finds the basement empty except for Pickman's artwork. Barely glancing at the art, Thurber instantly grabs a can of lighter fluid or oil and begins covering the area, much to the protest of Pickman, who has come from a back room. .
Thurber finally reveals his true feelings to Pickman, expressing his disdain for his artwork which led him to think he was either an alcoholic or a lunatic. However, he goes on to say that the artwork is what drives him and the others crazy. Thurber shoots Pickman, mistakenly thinking he was looking for a gun. Pickman, in his final moments, ominously reveals that his work is inspired not by his imagination, but by real life, offering Thurber a glimpse of a "family portrait" of monsters.
Much to Thurber's horror, a strange monster emerges from the pit, but instead of attacking, it pulls Pickman's body back into the pit and disappears.
Sometime later, Thurber, along with his family, attends the exhibition at the gallery. To his surprise and horror, Pickman's artwork adorns the walls. He quickly finds Joe and finds him standing in front of one of the paintings, singing in a strange, unfamiliar language. When Joe turns to look at Thurber, he has smashed his face and cut out his left eye. Frightened for his family, Thurber flees and finds them looking at one of the paintings, immediately stopping them.
At the end of a long day, Thurber returns home, only to find that the worst has happened. Rebecca took out both of her eyes and, in her madness, decapitated her own son and roasted him for "the party" in her oven.
Because thurber not go crazy before?
Thurber may have a stronger constitution than the rest, but the lack of exposure to Pickman's paintings in his youth nearly drove him insane. If he had continued to search for Pickman's art, he would certainly have gone mad sooner.
He's collectionneur even human?
While Pickman was definitely in human form, he's definitely not "human". He belongs to a kind of ghouls, like the monster that came out of the depths of the well. It's also why Pickman can create such art without having to do it himself.
Was James still the target?
Pickman may not have known ill intentions toward Thurber's family, but his works foreshadowed the tragic fate of Rebecca and James. Either way, by the time Thurber and his family came into contact with Pickman, they were doomed to trade.
