Queen guitarist Brian May recently shared his feelings about the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. May spoke about Hawkins during an interview with SiriusXM, saying he felt "so frustrated" by his passing.
"Taylor wasn't even my generation," May says (via Variety). “I see him as a boy – like I saw George Michael as a boy – losing them is wrong. It makes you so frustrated. It makes you feel like you want to negotiate with death... It makes you feel like if you've watched it enough, talked about it enough, analyzed it enough, maybe you can to bring back. But of course, that's just not how it all works.
Hawkins was a huge Queen fan, and the Foo Fighters regularly covered the band during their live performances. At the drummer's final gig with Foo Fighters at Lollapalooza Argentina, Hawkins and Grohl swapped places — Grohl taking the kit and Hawkins providing lead vocals — for a cover of Queen's "Somebody To Love."
“Taylor was very close to [Queen], he came to my studio a few times,” May says. “In my life, I talk to him often. I spoke to him barely a week ago since we lost him. We talk about stuff, we talk about Dave [Grohl] what life is like, its joys, its frustrations, being in Foo Fighters.
May also spoke about her first encounter with Hawkins and Pat Smear, calling them "the most knowledgeable Queen fans" and describing Hawkins as "Queen's best publicist ever."
"They knew more about us than we did," May says. “He was so good for our image! " he adds. “Where he sort of saw us as cool – which a lot of people didn't at the time. »
Hawkins died March 25 in Colombia. He was 50 years old. Following news of his passing, the band canceled all of their upcoming tour dates.
