the essentials in a nutshell
- In 1988 hostages were taken in Gladbeck in the Ruhr area for several days.
- Two gangsters robbed a bank and took several people hostage.
- They took them on an odyssey through Germany. For some, the journey ended fatally.
It's a hot summer day in 1988 in Gladbeck, Germany when two gangsters rob a bank. One of the two and obviously the chef is called Hans-Jürgen Rösner and speaks a broad Ruhrpott dialect.
He wants to negotiate with the police. " I do not care. I will shoot the two employees here and put the gun in my mouth,” he threatens.
This is followed by a 54 hour hostage situation in which the bank robbers continue to kidnap and threaten new people.
The Netflix documentary “Gladbeck” works on this case and shows shocking material from the time.
Unprecedented media exploitation
The media are always present – journalists, photographers and viewers follow the dramatic events live on the spot. They want interviews with the kidnappers and they get them.
Rösner loves bathing in public. He willingly gives information to the media while holding hostages on a bus.
One of the photographers even offers himself in exchange for the release of a hostage, which Rösner refuses.

Victims are also interviewed by journalists. They should let you know how they are. One of them is the seductive Silke Bischoff, 18, in whom the press is particularly interested.
With a loaded gun to her head, she says she's fine under the circumstances. You don't think the gangster would pull the trigger.
Netflix Documentary Shows: It Was Journalism Horror
The hostage-taking ends after more than two days with several dead and injured.
But the sensationalist way in which the press treated this case still has repercussions today. After the Gladbeck tragedy, for example, a law came into force which prohibits journalists from interviewing hostage takers.
