Astro A10 Gen 2: The new revision of the famous headset Gaming
– Reviews News
In the landscape of Gaming, helmets Gaming are becoming more and more essential. The sound sector video games is now at the highest level, and the market for such devices has been flooded in recent years with models of all types and price ranges. Five years after the arrival of the entry-level model, Astro Gaming, the division of Logitech specializing in headsets Gaming high quality, has studied a complete overhaul of its most affordable headphones, the A 10 model, finding a good compromise to be able to fit within the established budget, while maintaining a good quality audio sector and solid comfort of use .
This new version is now available in five different colors (black, lilac, mint, gray and white) at a very competitive price and compatible with practically all platforms, from old and new generation consoles to the most modern PCs. But let's see them in detail.
Being a wired headset, the new version of Astro A10 is compatible with almost all devices with a 3,5 inch jack connector.
The ASTRO A10 GEN 2 are 246 gram headphones, wired via a detachable two meter 3,5mm jack cable which also includes a chat volume controller. The company also thought of PC owners, integrating the classic headphone and microphone splitter into the package. The pavilions incorporate 32 mm neodymium drivers and are of the circum-auricular type, in order to adhere very well to the temples and guarantee good isolation even in the event of not excessively high volume. For some users they may seem a bit small, but they have proven to be extremely comfortable. It is easy to understand how to wear them thanks to the letters R and L present inside, and, finesse, also thanks to the Braille code, for the blind, located at the end of the headband.
For the ear cushions we opted for a standard memory foam, which insulates little but at least does not tire the ear even after several hours of play and in case it can also be removed to be washed separately or replaced. The 6mm unidirectional microphone is located on the left earcup. It cannot be detached, but it can be folded down: it supports the flip-to-mute system, so it only activates automatically when in the down position. The slim shaft is flexible and once in place you can adjust it however you want.
Speaking of the upper arch, we appreciated that it is very flexible and resistant: the plastic with which it is made, which has a matte finish, can be bent and twisted without the helmet being penalized or damaged. This is an excellent solution for those who are used to "mistreating" their headphones, who can count on significant resistance, for this price range. To adjust the height of the pavilions, on the other hand, the headphones have a sliding system, with some rubberized finishes, which does not allow to have a brake in clicks at the desired size. To do this, remember to arrange them at the right height when they are worn.
On the connection side, we are faced with a universal headset, since it is able to connect to audio sources exclusively via the 3,5 mm jack cable. Inside the package you will find both the single cable to connect directly to your pad or console, or the double cable for separate connection to all microphone and headphone outputs. There is also a small volume wheel along the cable. ASTRO Gaming therefore guarantees full compatibility with all gaming systems such as PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, not to mention PCs, Macs and mobile devices still equipped with the 3,5 mm jack input.
We appreciated the hardness of the hoops to modify and adjust the height of the bells, they are indeed harder than normal and therefore it is difficult for the helmet to move, remaining well adhered to the head throughout the gaming sessions.
We tested the ASTRO A10 GEN 2 on Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Rainbow Six Siege, testing them on both Xbox Series X and PC. The 32mm audio drivers are also enhanced with ASTRO's Audio V2 technology. The overall quality is good, although we noticed a slight drop in quality on certain loud volumes. To give you a concrete example, the long shots noticeable on Halo Infinite are not felt clearly, resulting in a bit muddy, but fortunately everything changes in close encounters.
While playing Rainbow Six Siege we had no problems, managing to even distinguish enemy footsteps (very important in a tactical title like this). On Forza Horizon 5, the roar of the engines is pleasant, but remains more satisfying in racing than in replay. If you usually use headphones also to listen to music, movies and TV series, we want to reassure you: the ASTRO A10 GEN 2 remain solid even for this type of entertainment, although it must always be considered that they aren't designed for it and so the quality stays in the media, never being particularly immersive.
The microphone can be activated simply by lowering the stem, an operation which, in crucial moments, could be more "complex" than the traditional activation button.
As these are entry-level headphones, it is clearly necessary to forget to intervene manually on the equalization, however the situation has never been so problematic as to not understand the meaning of a precise sound or of not being able to hear a dialogue between characters. Net of a few cases where the sound seemed a little muddy, we must admit that the performance has always proved to be quite good in terms of the target audience of the headphones and the price at which it is offered on the market.
There's no microphone volume selector or monitoring system to hear your voice through the headset: this headset is designed for those who want a reliable product with which to embark on solo adventures or multiplayer challenges, but nothing more. The microphone, given its omnidirectional nature, also picks up surrounding noise, but still transmits a clear and clearly distinguishable voice to playmates in chat. The flip-to-mute mechanism is easy to use, though we might have preferred a dedicated button next to the volume wheel for better accessibility.
Overall, the sound result is certainly superior to the price range at which the Astro A10 Gen 2 are offered: we are therefore faced with a compromise for purists of sophisticated designs (or RGB lighting) due to the plastic with which it is made. headphone body, which is however balanced by the excellent experience of use in the game, if we consider the price / quality ratio. A good choice for anyone looking for an essential but functional helmet at a price, just over fifty euros on Amazon or the official store, absolutely competitive.
