Android Auto suddenly forgets how it should handle phone calls

The phone call support that comes with Android Auto is one of the app's most important features, as it significantly reduces distracted driving. But as Android Auto users occasionally find out the hard way, the way the app handles phone calls is tricky to say the least. And such an issue now seems to affect a group of users, as they report a bug causing incoming call audio to be routed to the phone speakers.
In other words, when you receive a new phone call and Android Auto is running on the car head unit, the pick up sends the sound to the mobile device instead of the car speakers. It goes without saying that talking on the phone is much more difficult this way, especially since the volume is rather low and the mobile device must be put into speakerphone mode to at least hear something.
No workaround is known, and according to people who have encountered this problem, it also occurs on the latest versions of the app. In other words, the recently released Android Auto 7.4 has the same issue, so right now it's hard to say if there's a fix to bring things back to normal.
Google hasn't acknowledged this bug either, meaning users are pretty much on their own trying to find a way to restore phone calls to their cars.
What we don't know, however, is whether the bug is seen on Android 12 or not. Updating to the new version of the OS has so far been a crazy roller coaster ride, so if the new OS is the one to blame for all of this, rolling back to Android 11 might be the only one. solution until Google comes up with a fix.
The good news is that few people seem to be affected, but Google should investigate the error nonetheless.
