Madison Taylor Baez made a strong impression on the second night of auditions for season 17 of America has talent when Simon Cowell discovered his singing in the public. The way it works is that when the show takes a break, the warmer audience moves in and gives a variety of people a chance to sing along.
That night, the 11-year-old from Orange County, Calif., was singing "Amazing Grace" when Simon heard her as she walked back to her place at the judges' table and, in a AGT first, he asked her to come on stage to audition. The rest is history: Maddie was amazing, and Howie mandel pushed the Golden Buzzer for her, sending her straight to Live Shows.
Tonight, she will face 10 other artists, including another Golden Buzzer, Hart Chapel– for one of only two places that would take her to the final and her dream of winning the competition. So we asked him what his strategy would be to help him get out of it.
"My plan is to channel all my energy into singing," Maddie said. Parade.com in this exclusive interview. "I'm going to put my heart into it. I'm going to use my dad and all the pain I've been through as motivation to sing this song. I will give it my all. »
The pain that Maddie talks about is the fact that her father Chris was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer when she was 3 years old. To help him, Maddie used to sing for him during his chemo treatment and other hospital stays.
“I have always been by his side,” she said. “Usually 'Amazing Grace' was the song I sang to her. That's what made him stronger. »
And that's why she chose him to sing America has talent and why she plans to donate a good portion of her winnings to cancer research if she wins. The good news is that Chris is cancer free.

How fun it was to sit in the audience for your AGT audition when it's something you've wanted to do for years?
Just being able to audition and get the Golden Buzzer was amazing. Being in the audience, I was so excited. I was hoping to sing for the commercial break. Then Simon called me and when I got on stage, to be honest, I was really freaked out. Everything was blurry. But it all happened so fast and once Howie hit the Golden Buzzer it was like my dream had come true.
You went to AGT or watch since the age of 4. Why is this the year you finally got to audition?
You know what? I think it was just my time. I always wanted to audition, but I always wanted to be ready. I felt ready this year. I went there and gave it my all.

How surprised were you when Howie pushed the Golden Buzzer for you? Did you have any idea when the voting started that this is what he was going to do?
Not at all. Once I sang the song on stage, I was nervous because I didn't know what they were going to think. I heard everyone in the crowd chant "Golden Buzzer, Golden Buzzer". At that time, I was panicking. I didn't know what to expect. Howie got up and he walked over to the Golden Buzzer, he pressed it and all my dreams came true.

How come you sang for your father in the hospital?
When I was born, my dad was in love with all Motown music, and he wanted to pass it on to me. So he made me discover all the music of the 60s and 70s, all the Motown music. I immediately fell in love with it. When he went to the hospital, I always learned new songs. I would steal his iPad, go through his iTunes, and learn and listen to all these new songs to sing to him to make him happy. This is where it all really started.
You said you would spend the million dollars, if you won, on cancer research. Would you like to keep some and maybe give yourself something?
I think a lot of that money would go to cancer research, not just for my dad, but for everyone else who's had cancer. It's a horrible disease. I also think that I would give some of it to my family, to my mother. I don't know what I would like to get. Maybe a bunch of candy or something.

You have professional credits. You played young Selena Quintanilla on Netflix Selena: the series and you've sung the national anthem at many major sporting events. What is the dream? Is the dream a singing career or an acting career?
To be honest, I think it's a mix of actor and singer. I love to sing; it has always been my passion. But acting, I fell in love with acting. I think both.
Your Showtime series, Leave the one on the right in, was picked up for 10 episodes. Tell me a bit about your role in it and the start of filming.
Thus, in Leave the one on the right in, I play a young girl named Eleanor Kane. She's about 12 years old and she's a science freak. She likes astronomy, she likes the planets, she likes everything that can exist in space. And then she is bitten by a creature. Thus, for 10 years, she and her father have been on the run and must kill so that she can survive since she is now a vampire.
What was it like working with Demian Bichir, who plays your father?
Oh, Demian was amazing. I loved him playing my father. He's just an amazing actor, amazing person overall. It was great to work with him.
Have you started filming yet?
We finished filming about a month ago. Six months of filming. It was really fun, I loved everyone I worked with.
Since you're done filming, if you win, you can go to Las Vegas and headline AGT live show there?
Yes yes. I'm super excited about this.
Are you homeschooled? Is that how you juggle school and your career? Or should you transfer to another school in Las Vegas?
No, actually, I'm still at my original school. They are really flexible. They send me all my homework and I send it back to them. They really support what I do.
Tell me who some of your musical icons are. Is there anyone you might like to duet with?
My musical icons are Bruno Mars, Meghan Trainoret Charlie Puth. They are all very good artists. But I also really like the old ones. I really like Sam Cooke, Etta James, Aretha Franklinand Jackson Five. I like all the old stuff, all the Motown music. I think someone to duet with would probably be Bruno Mars. I really like his style, his singing. He just looks really cool overall.
You also play several instruments. How many instruments do you play and which ones?
I play six instruments. I play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, saxophone, violin and ukulele.

Speaking of saxophone, have you talked to Avery Dixon?
No, you know what? I do not have. I haven't had the opportunity to meet him yet. I was like, “Oh my God, he's an amazing saxophonist. “I loved his number. I just didn't get the chance to meet him. But I think Avery is great.
How did you learn to play? Are you self-taught or did you take lessons?
I am generally self-taught. I took the saxophone for school, the violin for school, and I learned to play it after school on my own. But I am mostly self-taught.
