Álex Villazán told us that recording 'Alma' in mid-November in Asturias was wonderful despite the coldbut we dare to bet that with the 40 degrees that devastated Madrid when we had the opportunity to discuss with him a few weeks ago, the idea of being around ten Asturian degrees at that time would have looked like at a party.
The heat did not prevent us from talking at length with the actor who, after going to the theater -where he reinforced his passion for the game-, returns to stand in front of the camera in 'Alma', a nine-episode series now available on Netflix and in which he shares the poster with Mireia Oriol, Pol Monen, Claudia Roset, Milena Smit or Elena Irureta, among others.
« It was an adventure to be in this production and to work with the teamwhich is spectacular”, he tells us with an illusion that can be read in each of the words he uses to tell us about the series.

What can you tell us about your character in 'Alma'?
Tom seems like a pretty cute character to me. In the end he wants to fight to help his friends, because he is very honest and loyal to them and what is beautiful about him is above all that he resists in this. At the same time, he is a boy who persists in his dreams, despite the misadventures that may happen to him. It seems very important and the coolest thing about the character.
Could we say that mystery is the main ingredient of 'Alma'?
Yes, we all have this perception. The main plot is about Alma, and from there they spin circles that expand the story, but it all starts from there and that has to be the premise that it all starts from.
You started filming the series in September 2020, just a few months after confinement. Almost two quiet years later, how are you living the premiere?
Imagine (laughs)… we have a huge desire! Especially to see what feeling it provokes in the public, because in the end we tell stories for the public, so that they get excited, ask themselves questions, continue to think about it after watching the series, even that he wants to see her a second time. Also, this series is very prone to that: you finish it and you want to see it again because you see the series with new eyes and that seems very cool to me, of course. So we are eagerly waiting for it to be published and receive natural comments.

How did it go with the rest of the 'Alma' team?
A marvel, really. I hadn't worked with them but we knew each other either through work or through networks and, for example, with Pol we had spoken once to see if we should work together because I liked his work and watch , these things happen in the end. And with the others also very well. They are all wonderful actors and actresses with incredible resources and I learned a lot from them and the whole team. For everyone, 'Alma' has been one of their most special projects, if not their most, and it's been an adventure to be in this production and to work with the crew, which is spectacular.
Having touched on all registers, and even mixing theater with audiovisual projects, do you stay on stage or in front of the camera?
I feel more comfortable on stage because I've spent more time doing theatre, and it gives tools and security than in front of the camera, because maybe I don't have the same level ; although I am working on it, to find these springs which help you to interpret. So, hey, I stick to planks because I feel like a fish in water, but I also like AV a lot because I take it as a challenge and a lesson for May the next one come out better.

In learning a little about you and your career, I was surprised that as a child you practiced jiu-jitsu.
I have been doing judo and jiu-jitsu since I was 4 years old, I started school and continue almost until today because I always try to escape to train. In the end, I carry it so deep inside me that for me it's like acting, doing theater and it gives me life. It's something that I love. But since, unfortunately, in Spain, you can't make a living from jiu-jitsu since it's a minority sport, and you have to earn a living, I opted for the interpretation that I was passionate about. But hey, you can always reconcile and find time to train if you have enough time to film or travel.
And in 2011, you even managed to get third place in the world championship.
That same year we started training to compete internationally and in the end the hard work paid off and we were able to secure third place. To tell you out of curiosity that the date, by the way, was 11/11/2011.
And from jiu-jitsu, to series like "Charon" or now "Alma", to films, and you even won the Union of Actors and Actresses award for Best New Theater Actor for "The Strange Incident of dog at midnight”.
In the end, it's a long distance race, even if it's very cliché, but it's true that things are done little by little, by working and that experience makes perfect. Since I was little I loved the theater, I discovered that it was what I wanted to do and to devote myself to and that's what I tried to do in those years.

Do you practice other sports?
It depends a lot on where I am, on the demands of the job... But I always like to be in contact with sport because my body demands it, whether it's training with contemporary dance for the theatre, practicing jiu-jitsu if I have an outing or if I'm working out at the gym with another trainer. Moreover, the difference experienced between being in contact with the sport and not being in contact with it is enormous. Sport is an escape that will give you oxygen and a lot of strength to face anything and have those physical conditions that are often necessary.
