Gmail has a clean and simple interface – but there's more under the hood than meets the eye.
There are tons of hidden hacks and tricks to optimize your Gmail experience, including canceling a heavily worded email.
More than 300 billion emails were sent per day in 2020 – and many emails were written, sent and received on Google's Gmail platform.
Gmail accounts for 1,8 billion of the 5,6 billion active email accounts, and each account does more than just send and receive.
Cancel sending an email
Granted, everyone sent a message through cyberspace that they immediately wished they could pick up — on Gmail, that's possible.
After you've sent an email, a little box will appear in the bottom right asking if you want to unsend - click directly on the word 'cancel' after you've sent as clicking anywhere else will make the option disappear.
In default settings, the cancel icon will appear on the screen for five seconds – this can be changed in settings.
Advanced search
The advanced search is a useful tool for finding information buried in your inbox.
The advanced search tool can be accessed by clicking the icon with three scroll bars in the search box at the top of your inbox.
You can search by sender, recipient, date, words – you can even narrow down an email by searching for words it doesn't contain.

Color code important messages
Message starring puts your most important emails in a separate folder.
But these posts can be further organized with color-coded stars.
Enable more color options by going to settings, scroll down on the general tab and drag more color options to the "in use" section.
Smart composition
Google's writing suggestions are a blessing for users who write in traditional office jargon.
By simply typing the beginning of a sentence, Gmail will suggest the rest of it, saving you keystrokes and time.
Smart Compose can be turned on and off in Settings – Google is even accepting feedback on how to improve the quality of sentences suggested by Smart Compose.

Personalized inbox
Gmail's default layout is pretty basic to appeal to the masses.
But users can prioritize their emails by clicking the quick settings gear icon and selecting a custom inbox based on what they want to see first: unread, starred, or important.
You can apply the multiple inboxes feature, which can siphon all bot mails to another inbox.
Confidential mode
An email can be made to disappear, like a Snapchat.
You can set an expiration date on a private email by clicking the lock icon near the send button.
Your employer can revoke your network's confidential mode, preventing employees from sending messages that disappear.

Silent conversation
Disabling a thread that is receiving excessive replies can provide a serious reprieve for users sending office-wide emails.
It's a simple feature – but it's a bit buried.
Check the box to the left of an email you received and an options bar will appear at the top.
Click on the three dots to bring up the drop-down menu, and select mute for sweet, gentle silence via email.
Gmail is free, but that doesn't mean it has to be basic.
Get the most out of your account by applying all available features.
