We won't need to speculate on the iPhone 14 rumors and leaks any longer, as Apple is almost certainly revealing its latest line of iPhones at its Far Out event scheduled for September 7th. But, because we're so close to launch, we've started thinking about what we expect from the iPhone 14 family. Here's our short (rather realistic) list:
1. An in-screen fingerprint scanner
One feature we miss in older iPhone models is the fingerprint reader built into the home button. Sure, Face ID is a perfectly acceptable method of unlocking your iPhone, but accessing your phone with the tap of a finger is often more convenient.
Dedicated fingerprint scanners have improved dramatically since Apple ditched the Touch ID-enabled home button, and many Android phones now embed readers into their screens (although some are better than others). Apple has at least indicated its interest in in-display sensors, and we're sure the company could create a reliable and accurate reader for the iPhone 14.
2. No notch
Aesthetically, the notch at the top of the iPhone (or any phone, for that matter) is just plain ugly. While there's no perfect way to fit a selfie camera into a phone with virtually non-existent bezels, punch-hole cameras at least take up less space. Apple has long adopted the notch, while most Android devices have adopted the smaller punch-hole style. We think iPhone 14 is the perfect time for the company to shift gears. That might be overly optimistic, but an under-displayed front camera would be even better.

3. A better telephoto lens
The iPhone 3's 13x telephoto lens produces great images, but the 3x zoom isn't as impressive as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and its 10x optical zoom lens. Some rumors indicate that the iPhone 14 Pro models will sport a thicker camera module, so we can imagine a new periscope lens that zooms in a bit further.
Yes, we'd like all iPhone models to get 10x optical zoom, but we expect Apple to limit such a feature to Pro models. Needless to say, a greater zoom lens reach would turn the iPhone into an even more capable photography tool.
4. A USB-C port
The Lightning connector works fine, but just about every other device on the planet uses USB-C, and it's high time for Apple to move to the more universal standard. In fact, it already uses USB-C on the MacBook Air, iPad Pro, and iPad mini. Also, new laws in Europe will require all phones to use the same type of connector in just a few years. A USB-C connector also opens up the possibility of faster data transfer speeds.
Will it happen this time? We are not sure. But we're confident that Apple will eventually switch to USB-C (either due to a legal requirement or simply to standardize its product line). In the meantime, you can prepare by upgrading to a fast USB-C charger.
5. Faster wireless charging
MagSafe is awesome. It makes wireless charging a little easier by magnetically locking the wireless charging pad to the back of the phone so you always know you're in the right place. MagSafe can be a little faster though. Currently, it supports wireless charging speeds of up to 15W. That's nice, but wouldn't it be nice if you could charge at a faster rate? The technology for faster wireless charging exists – OnePlus (opens in a new window) offers 50W wireless chargers for its phones.

Will this actually happen? The rumor mill has been pretty quiet on whether we should expect any new developments in the wireless charging department. But if Apple wants to be one step ahead of Google and Samsung, adopting faster wireless charging could be a great way to achieve that goal.
6. A foldable design (Hey, we can dream)
We recently spent a lot of time with the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and enjoyed the experience. Moving from the small screen to the big screen is eye-opening, and we want more people to experience it. That's why we're hoping Apple will announce a foldable iPhone at its Far Out event. Sure, it's long, but Apple usually likes at least one mic drop moment at its events. And what could be more surprising than a foldable iPhone?
