Ventoy is an open source software that allows users to create ISO, WIM, IMG, VHS(x) and EFI files on a bootable USB drive.
However, users have reported issues with Ventoy not working properly and having startup issues. Follow the guide below to quickly find a solution.
Why is Ventoy not working?
Users may have issues with Ventoy not working due to corrupted ISO files, which will create problems to boot an image file. If your PC cannot treat Ventoy as a boot device, you may need to disable Secure Boot. Read on to find out how.
Can Windows 10/11 boot in Ventoy?
Ventoy is compatible with Windows 10 and 11, and users can skip Windows 11 hardware check during installation. However, Ventoy can be affected by anti-virus software and protection programs. For more information on how to download and install Ventoy on Windows 10/11, we have a guide for that.
Does Ventoy work with UEFI?
Yes, Ventoy runs in UEFI mode and provides secure boot functionality by default. Ventoy is also compatible with BIOS Legacy. However, some ISO files do not support UEFI mode, so booting these files in UEFI will not work.
How to fix Ventoy when it doesn't work?
1. Update Ventoy
Users can update Ventoy by installing the latest version or using VentoyU, a Ventoy update utility. VentoyU allows users to update and install ISO files on USB drive.
Updating Ventoy and ISO files can help prevent future startup issues with Ventoy. Try updating it and see if that fixes the problem.
2. Delete Ventoy Secure Boot Key
- Dump ventoy-delete-key-1.0.iso and copy it to the Ventoy USB stick.
- To restart your computer and select ventoy-delete-key-1.0-iso.
- After reboot, select Delete MOK and click Carry on.
- when he asks Delete key(s)Select Yes.
- In the mot de passe popup, enter 123 then press Enter.
- Select To restart.
By default, Secure Boot is enabled from version 1.0.76. Although Ventoy is designed to boot with Secure Boot enabled, if your computer does not support Secure Boot, it will fail. Delete the Ventoy Secure Boot key to fix this problem.
3. Test the USB key
- Plug in your USB key and open File browser then right click on the drive and select Properties.
- Under the Instruments tab, click Vérifier.
- Click Analyze and repair the drive.
- Allow the repair of the USB key.
If you have a faulty USB key, you may have boot problems. Perform a scan to check if there are any existing errors on the USB. You can repair the drive or replace it. There are also third-party tools that can be used to check for faulty or fake USB drives.
4. Bypass Legacy BIOS Range Limitation
- Open the Ventoy Installer and click Option.
- Select Partition settings (-r option under Linux).
- Check the box next to Preserve space at the bottom of the disk and enter the number of GB, then click Okay.
This solution is for Legacy BIOS only, not UEFI. Some legacy BIOSes have access limitation and will not read a disc that exceeds the limitation.
What file formats does Ventoy support?
Ventoy supports ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), EFI files using exFAT file system. This file system offers better compatibility with Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems.
Hopefully one of the solutions above will help you fix Ventoy if it is not working or has start-up issues. Let us know in the comments which solution worked for you.
