If you've downloaded torrents, you know what magnet links are and how they work. Magnet links are most commonly used for peer-to-peer file sharing. However, several users reported that magnet links are not working in Chrome/Firefox/Opera.
This issue occurs when the browser refuses to identify the link, resulting in an error. It could be a problem with the browser or the link itself.
In this article, we have listed some troubleshooting tips that you can try to fix the magnet links not working issue on your Chrome and Firefox browser.
When I click on a magnet link, nothing happens?
Every browser has a built-in feature that allows users to download magnet links. In Chrome, this is the Sites can request to manage protocols feature, and if it's disabled, you won't be able to use a magnet link.
Also, in some cases, clicking on a certain part of the link might work, so you might as well try that and remember that it's usually the last part. Also, if no application has been configured for magnet links, things won't work and you'll have to edit the registry.
The problem could also be with the magnet link or the client you are using for the download, for example uTorrent or BitTorrent.
What can I do if the magnet links aren't working?
1. Edit Registry Editor
- Press Windows + R, type regedit in the text field and click Okay.
- Click Yes on the UAC notice that appears.
- In the registry editorPaste the following path into the address bar and press Enter:
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Magnet\shell\open\command - check the Data column for the Data entry here, which will show the full path to the torrent client directory.
- If the path does not point to your torrent client installation, you need to edit and make the changes. Leave it as is if the path is valid and proceed to the next method.
If the path doesn't match your torrent client's installation directory, here's how to change it.
- Press Windows + E and navigate to the following location while replacing *Your username* with your computer:C:\Users\*your username*\AppData\Roaming\
- Next, open your torrent client folder. in my case it is uTorrentso the full path will look like this:
C:\Users\*your username*\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent - For this we also need to add the .exe file. So the full path will be:
C:\Users\*your username*\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe - In Registry Editor, right-click the Defect value and select Edit.
- Change the path inside the first quote with the path of your torrent client and click Okay to save changes. Leave everything else in the data field as is.
- Close the registry editor and start your browser.
If the uTorrent magnet link is not working, adding its path to the registry may help.
2. Manually create a log file
- open a new Buffer window and paste the following into it:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\URLWhitelist]
“1”=”magnet:*” - Press Ctrl + S and save file as Chrome fix.reg magnet links keeping save as type un All the files.
- Once saved, double-click the file to run it.
- Restart the browser and check if the magnet links work as before.
Note that you may need to repeat the steps each time Chrome installs a new update. Once done, check if you are still unable to open the magnet links. If so, proceed to the next method.
3. Check content settings
- Jeter Google Chrome, paste the following path in the address bar, and press Enter:chrome://settings/controllers
- Now select the Sites can request to manage protocols option.
Once done, restart the browser for the changes to take effect. If magnet links didn't work in Vuze so far, you should be fine.
How do I manually add a magnet link?
There are several ways to do this. You can paste the magnet link in a separate tab, press enter and the download should start.
Or, there is a somewhat complex method that has proven to be very effective for most users. In this, right click on the page, select View source codethen manually locate and add the magnet link for the download.
This method is useful on sites where you are having problems downloading. Try this, and you should be able to download via magnet links with no problem.
