Users cannot upgrade to Windows 10 when their hard drives do not have enough storage space for upgrades. As such, Windows 10 version 1903 will include new reserved storage when the 19H1 update rolls out.
This is the storage that is automatically reserved to ensure there is enough space for Windows updates. And then you can disable or enable reserved storage as you like.
Microsoft announced reserved storage in its Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18312 blog post. The new preview build 18312 is the first to show reserved storage. However, Windows Insiders need to edit the registry to enable Reserved Storage.
The new feature is currently available to users running build versions from 18298 to the latest. This is how users can enable reserved storage on these preview builds of Windows 10.
How to Enable Reserved Storage in Windows 10?
1. Use the DISM command at the command prompt
Reserved storage can be easily enabled using the built-in command prompt. The DISM command can enable and disable reserved storage in a single line.
1. Press the button windows + X keyboard shortcut to open the WinX menu.
2. Select Command prompt (administrator) from the list. Users must be logged in with an administrator account to enable reserved storage.
3. Enter the following command: dism /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:Enabled
4. Press Go in to execute the command.
5. Reserved storage is now enabled on your device.
2. Use Registry Editor
- Run order as an administrator Users who are not logged into administrator accounts can enable Windows 10's built-in administrator account by pressing Windows hotkey + X and selecting Command prompt (administrator).
- Then type "user manager active/network:yes" at the command prompt and press Enter.
- Restart Windows 10 and select to log in with the new administrator account.
- Launch Run with your keyboard shortcut Windows key + R.
- Enter 'regedit' in the Run accessory and click on the Okay button.
- Then navigate to this registry path in the Registry Editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ReserveManager. Users can copy and paste this registry path into the registry editor address bar with Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V keyboard shortcuts.
- Click on the ReserveManager button on the left of the window.
- Then double click on the DWORD ShippedWithReserves.
- Enter '1' in the Value data text box.
- press the Okay to close the Edit DWORD window.
- Restart Windows after modifying the registry.
- Thereafter, users can view the amount of reserved storage in the Settings app. Click on Cortana Type here to search then enter the keyword "storage" in the search field.
- Select Storage to open the Settings app.
- then click Show more categories, System and reservations Yes reserved storage in the Settings app to open the reserved storage details shown in the snapshot below. This is one way to enable reserved storage.

Uninstall options features to reduce reserved storage
In the snapshot above, the reserved storage amounts to approximately seven GB. The amount of reserved storage partly depends on the number of optional features in Windows 10. - Open the Cortana search box.
- Enter "optional features" in the search field.
