It was clear that in Netflix they weren't going to let the duo formed by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese after the success achieved with 'Dark', just like the fact that they were going to have a hard time not disappointing the followers of that one with '1899', one of the most anticipated original productions of the platform in 2022 and which was finally released on Thursday, November 17.
A few days ago I shared my first impressions of '1899' with you, but now I've had the chance to see it in its entirety. My first warning is that you don't expect this to be a miniseries and that all the mysteries will be solved with these eight episodes, but also that there comes a time when it's not entirely clear if this is genius or a joke.
lights and shadows
A detail that becomes more evident as the episodes go by is that the highlighting is focusing more and more on one character – I won't say which one so as not to reveal more than necessary. At the beginning everything is much more choralbeing one of its greatest hits the ability to introduce us to an endless number of characters and that each has their own drama in the great mystery that '1899' poses, but there comes a time when it's time to put it all back on track good track, being surely the fifth episode in which everything starts to jump in the air.
This means that "1899" gives answers to all the strange events happening inside this ship, which leads to the sci-fi component in the foreground. There comes a time when you have to make constant leaps of faith so the puzzle pieces can fit together, but it's also fair to note that at no point does it leave the feeling of a random enigma, but behind it is a master plan in which everything has a reason. And the clues are not lacking very quickly that make sense later.
In addition, the series mixes the enigmatic with the emotional with ease, something already present in its first episodes, but which goes even further when it comes to focusing on a single narrative line and giving explanations. Midway through the season, a totally disruptive element is introduced and you can be clear that subsequent episodes are built around this, leaving us with some awesome tuning work along the way. And it was shot with the same technology that was used in “The Mandalorian,” but they made great use of it.
For my part, one of the problems I have with the bet of Baran Bo Odar Yes Jantje Friese it is that these parallel dramas fade into the background or are completely left out when one of the keys to keeping the series going until then has been precisely in this variety of stimuli. Of course, not all of them were equally engaging, but there was a curious balance that always kept you alert and avoiding possible signs of narrative fatigue.
stretch the gum
And it is that the most disconcerting thing about '1899' is that it creates a lot of doubts when it puts all the cards on the table. Not so much because it only answers questions to create an even bigger unknown, but because it doesn't feel like that big climax that everything that's been brought up in the previous chapters needed, but more like a mere passing step to leave us with one of those cliffhangers that barely force Netflix to make a second season if you don't want to outrage millions of viewers.
In fact, the real problem is that in the end everything was a very detailed introduction to bring everything back to a new starting point. This remains in relation to this tension that those responsible for '1899' had been able to nurture so well since the first episode so that the idea remains that all the characters were only pieces on a board and not beings with their own voice.
From then on, this overdose of mysteries can very easily go from fascinating to indigestible. Be careful, not everything here is a kick forward as has happened several times with 'Lost', but several of them end up losing all kind of relevance, which leads to unwelcome frustration. And it's surprising, but it's not worth itespecially if the emotional part must also be important but the only feeling it causes is a certain indifference.
That said, the real key to "1899" lies in its future. Will be able Baran Bo Odar Yes Jantje Friese resignify everything correctly or will it end up being nonsense with the composition of serious and ambitious science fiction? Because for the moment the idea that it could have been completed in a single season dominates. Maybe a little longer, but that should have been enough.
Short
'1899' ends up saturating with its mysteries, because there comes a time when it takes an illuminating but can be weighty course. Here, I'm not thinking so much of the information overload that only results later as the fact that it almost seems like officials want to drag on too long trying to mask this data with a slew of revelations in an attempt to acquire an image of transcendence that does not reach.
