MADRID, Nov. 17 (CulturaOcio) –
Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, creators of Netflix's hit series Dark, start a new project. It is 1899, a horror and mystery series that shares many similarities with his earlier work. For this reason, they wanted to respond to the possible connection between the two.
Many fans have wondered if, given the dark tone of the 1899 plot, the story could be related to Dark in some way. Friese and bo Odar finally gave a straight answer on this, outright deny it.
“There are a lot of things in the [1899] DNA that come close to Dark in terms of be a puzzle that needs an active and engaged audience“, explains Friese in an interview with Entertainment Weelky. However, the creator also wanted to point out the differences between the two.
“There are things that are quite different in terms of mood and tonebut also rhythm and action elements. So it really is a beast in itself shares many of the same mechanics as Dark“, he says. For this reason, he is convinced that he has found a balance in his new job.
"I hope you feel like something really fresh and new, without ceasing to be exactly what Dark fans would like to see,” says Friese. In this regard, bo Odar comments on one of his big goals. “We like to play with genres and expectations. I think you have to watch it very carefully, because every little bit means something,” he suggests.
1899 tells the story of a ship of European migrants heading to New York in search of a better life. During their journey, they come across another seemingly abandoned ship adrift. That's when strange and turbulent events begin to happen to the crew members. The series is now available on Netflix.
