No thanks: I can safely do without the Netflix model with advertising

Netflix with ads? I can safely do without the new subscription model - CHIP Online Germany

🍿 REVIEWS News – Paris/France.

Disney Plus plans to offer customers an inexpensive, ad-supported subscription model. Netflix isn't ruling out such a concept either. It's a shame because it goes against the very idea of Streaming : be an experiment and not an advertising campaign. A commentary by Anna Schmid.

I did it again. I watched a five-minute video on YouTube about a crime, hair products, baked goods, and the backpacks everyone says they carry. How is such a mixture made? The five minute video was interrupted by three commercials.

At times like this, I am glad that services of Streaming like Netflix, Disney Plus or Amazon Prime Video can do without ads. That I can watch movies, series, documentaries and shows there all at once without being constantly bothered by shopping suggestions. After all, I pay a monthly fee for it.

What Disney Plus is so far baffles me. The service introduces a new subscription model that allows users to stream content at a lower cost. However, they must accept advertising for this. In the USA, the subscription option should be available from the end of 2022.

For me the Streaming with ads is not an experience of Streaming

For me the Streaming is just an ad-free experience.

There are definitely people for whom an ad-supported subscription model is an option. It doesn't matter if they see commercials and sales clips before or in the middle of the actual content. Finally, they also need to spend less money on the experience of Streaming than other users.

But there are also people like me for whom an experience of Streaming rich in publicity is no longer an experience of Streaming. Annoyed by spots they don't care about on a platform they pay to use. And who fear that the Disney Plus move is just the first in a much more global development direction.

Because Netflix, which has always defended the absence of advertising, does not completely reject Disney's proposal. CFO Spencer Neumann told Variety reporters, "It's not like we have anything against advertising, to be clear on that. And further: “Never say never. »

Research Shows Users Want Ad-Free Netflix

It is therefore quite possible that the leader of the Streaming or eventually one of the services that rely on ad-supported subscription models. In addition to Disney Plus, this already includes Hulu, HBO Max and Paramount+ as well as several platforms of Streaming athletic.

An additional source of income would undoubtedly be the advertising of subscription versions for Netflix. Especially since the service has gained significantly fewer new subscribers than expected with an increase of 8,3 million users at the end of 2021 and that competition in the sector of Streaming has increased considerably.

Only: Would users like it as much? As early as 2018, a study conducted by the Portal Hub showed that many customers would cancel their Netflix subscription if the service introduced advertising. 23% of the 1 respondents said they would leave the Netflix universe directly in such a case.

Netflix with ads? When in doubt, I prefer to sort it out

Finally, what Peter Fondulas, one of the study's authors, said is telling: "When we asked users what qualities they found most attractive about Netflix, the lack of advertising was almost always in head of list. This is probably still the case today. And not just on Netflix. Personally, I appreciate the Streaming ad-free in general, including Disney Plus.

However, if the prices of Streaming continue to grow at the current rate, ad subscriptions will likely become an alternative, if not the only one, for many users. Personally, I can't enjoy a movie if it's interrupted by ads about backpacking, baking, or hair care. If in doubt, I prefer to sort it out.
