Long before Blond will hit Netflix screens this week, Biopic about Marilyn Monroe was surrounded by controversy.
Conversations around the cinematic play – directed by Australian director Andrew Dominik and with Ana de Armas— began rising in January, when it received a rare NC-17 rating for its graphic depictions of sexual abuse and addressing issues like abortion.
The debate continued after its premiere in Venice Film Festival in September, and the very divided critical response at the time. Many have wondered why the film only focuses on the toxic relationships and often abusive Marilyn Monroe had with the men in his life, and not in his female friendships or his brilliant film career?
Were the extremely graphic rape scenes really necessary to tell Monroe's story? And perhaps the most basic question of all: does Dominik's perspective on the lives of Marilyn Monroe?
