Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners does better than most zombie games at making you feel like you're holding the horde of undead at arm's length. It does this by literally letting you hold a zombie at arm's length while you smash a bottle over its head, turn it upside down, then shove the jagged end into its soft skull.
The combat is truly spooky, with weapons that get stuck in Walkers, forcing you to shoot, shake, and ram through your enemies. The storyline is built around helping out with the various actions of post-apocalyptic New Orleans, which requires you to venture through the undead-infested city streets to find new supplies. But it's the melee combat that's the real draw of this game. You can create your own melee weapons, allowing you to get a lot of brutality.
LA Noire: The VR Case Files
When virtual reality became a, well, reality, many games were thought of that deserved all those delightful new dimensions. The blistering speed of a racing game, perhaps. The scale and spectacle of an open-world RPG, perhaps. However, LA Noire, a 2011 neo-noir action and detective role-playing game, might not be the game you expected to have on your mind.
That said, LA Noire was technically advanced for its time: its pioneering facial capture helped you pick baddies from those who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. While LA Noire's deductive side won Team Bondi praise, his fights weren't up to snuff. Enter LA Noire: The VR Case Files, a truncated version of the police game that not only improves on the relatively weak aspects of gunplay and driving, but is one of the best VR games on PC.

The "time moves when you move" mechanic remains ridiculously fun to this day, and the game strikes the perfect balance between slapstick action and stylish stunts. An evening of board games in VR? So Demeo will offer you everything you could expect from this concept and even more. It's a brilliant turn-based cooperative role-playing game where you play with friends, rolling the dice to tackle its fiendishly challenging levels. But you can also scale the game up or down to your liking, adding an extra dimension to this fantastic social VR experience. Thanks to the abundance of free content already provided and the arrival of other elements, Demeo is still high on our list of the best PC VR games.
boneworks
Of all the physics-based VR fighting and puzzle games, Boneworks is hands down the most polished and impressive. Its single-player campaign offers plenty of fun sandboxes to experiment with, whether swinging robot crabs by their legs or beating brainless zombies with a broomstick. Or you can stick with the classics and find a killer precision shooter. Boneworks is one of the best PC VR games and gives a glimpse into the future of VR interactivity.
Pistol whip

Asgard's Wrath (Oculus only)
Asgard's Wrath may not have Skyrim's level of content but, in our opinion, the focus on native VR swordfighting and character progression makes it the more important of the two VR games. It's a pristine three-part Nordic adventure that captures the heart of the RPG genre and realizes it in all its glory using the power of PC VR, helping it defeat its opponents in the fight for the best games. PCVR. Now, how about a sequel? Please ?
No Man's Sky VR
No Man's Sky has outdone itself with its VR support. Hello Games has focused on making VR integration seamless and natural, delivering an experience that feels like it was designed for VR from the ground up. Add to that the frankly huge number of new features and upgrades the game has implemented since launch and it's impossible to deny No Man's Sky a place in the list of best VR games on PC.
Lone Echo/Echo VR (Oculus only)
You could join Lone Echo 2 with this choice to get the full experience, but since that would be a rather expensive proposition, we're sticking with the groundbreaking original and its free-to-play multiplayer companion for now. Lone Echo paved the way for immersive weightless movement in VR and set a bar for VR visuals on PC that arguably has yet to be surpassed. The pacing is slow, but the emphasis on creating a bond between your character and those around them pays off, as does the enormous spectacle of the set. We'll be calling Lone Echo one of the best PC VR games for years to come.
Rez Infinite
Rez Infinite is a two-handed musical shooter where you battle waves of Tron-worthy enemies while moving through the subsystems of a corrupt AI from the distant future. The game is played in third person, and your character can “evolve” through multiple stages, each with their own quirks. This is a trance wonder that was originally released on the Dreamcast in 2001, but has since gone through iterative changes through various re-releases before coming to PC.
You can lock on up to eight enemies at once with your weapon, releasing the trigger to unleash a volley of homing shots, or pressing the fire button for rapid unit shots, and each action contributes to the game's bass-heavy soundtrack. Some enemies drop items that let you scale, while others give you a smart bomb that clears the screen. At the end of each stage, a spectacular boss awaits you. Although the entire game can be played in desktop mode, today's technology makes Rez Infinite one of the best VR games available.
The original game had five areas, all of which are even better with a headset. But a sixth area, dubbed Area X, is creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi's reimagining of the concept for VR. It's still one of the best PC VR games out there, but Beat Saber is a must-have wherever you enjoy VR.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
Skyrim VR successfully brings the entire RPG into headsets with full motion controls. It's not the most thorough implementation, but that alone makes it something you won't want to miss in VR. As well as giving you a strong sense of adventure, parts of Skyrim work incredibly well in VR, like the moment you first encounter a dragon or inspect a sword you've worked hard to earn in great detail. . There are better, more native VR games out there, but Skyrim VR is Skyrim… in VR, and it's worth watching.
A Township Tale (Early Access)
Another early access project that's been in development for a long time, A Township Tale has slowly but surely built up a loyal following thanks to its emphasis on interactive VR mechanics and cooperative multiplayer. You are tasked with building a village, gradually adding new features as you mine ever scarcer resources and upgrade your weapons. A real sense of risk in your adventures and a massive amount of content make this game one of the best PC VR games you can play right now.
Thumper
For developer Drool, creating a musical game was not enough: Thumper would be a game of rhythmic violence. We were intrigued when it was announced, and now we're captivated by how immersive it looks.
At the controls of a metal beetle hungry for lightning speed, this indie game makes you roar in psychedelic settings. Neon pathway resembles Amplitude and Guitar Hero, the notes being replaced by walls to skid over and obstacles to overcome. Each level introduces a new gameplay element, and your efforts culminate in a showdown with the giant animated skull, CRAKHEAD. Hey, at PCGN, we don't judge. Thumper is stunning in VR, his physicality and speed creating a heady mix with his original and catchy soundtrack. As far as music games go, this is by far one of the best VR games on PC. Drool says, "To achieve synesthetic bliss, you have to face rhythm hell." To say VR kicks things up a notch would be a gross understatement.
Onward (Early Access)
If Pavlov is VR's answer to Counter-Strike, then Onward is closer to something like Arma, with a focus on hyperrealism that paved the way for the mechanical complexity that VR can add to the shooting genre. Although still labeled as early access, Onward has felt like a full game for years now and is well deserving of its spot on the list of best PC VR games.
Eleven: Table Tennis
There aren't many sports that current VR technology can perfectly replicate but table tennis is one of them and, for our money, Eleven: Table Tennis is easily the best achievement yet. This is due to its precise physics and robust multiplayer and single-player options, which ensure that we will never need another table tennis game in VR again.
Moss
Third-person VR games might not make much sense at first glance, but Moss shows you why it does. This action-platformer is a really solid adventure on its own, but it's the bond you build with protagonist Quill over his few hours that shines. Moss is showing its age a bit in 2022, but hopefully Moss 2 will be ready to replace it when it launches.
until you fall
Until You Fall isn't focused on the realistic melee physics of Saints & Sinners or Boneworks, and that's good. This arcade-style roguelite uses on-screen indicators to force you to hone your reflexes, block and attack with split-second precision. Developer Schell Games masters the game's loop perfectly, making Until You Fall a game that's hard to put down. And that's a good thing since the game is also a fun exercise.
Star Wars: Squadrons
We still can't believe Star Wars: Squadrons ever existed. A complete Star Wars flying action game with a single-player campaign and a huge multiplayer component…in VR? Are we sure we are not dreaming? Well, if that's the case, we don't want to wake up, because Squadrons' highly immersive cockpits and space dogfights are everything we've ever wanted from VR, which makes it the one of the best VR games on PC.
Pavlov VR (Early Access)
Valve won't be bringing Counter-Strike to VR anytime soon, but luckily we have a worthy replacement in Pavlov VR. Developed consistently over several years, Pavlov has become the fastest competitive shooter to beat, with tons of weapons and environments spanning multiple eras and new game modes added at a blistering pace. The future is bright for Pavlov, and for multiplayer fans, this is one of the best PC VR games around.
Song in the smoke
There have been many attempts to adapt the survival genre to VR but, with its native mechanics, focused structure, and earthy atmosphere, Song in the Smoke is the best of them, hands down. You progress through multiple areas in a prehistoric wilderness, hunting and crafting items, while completing unique new challenges in each area that teach you new tricks and abilities. If you don't like the lack of purpose in some survival games, you'll appreciate Song in the Smoke's focused campaign, which makes it one of the best PC VR games.
for hikers
The best thing that can be said about Wanderer is that it's an escape room game that doesn't always feel like an escape room game. Its puzzles make excellent use of VR interactivity, and its ambitious setup has you jumping between time zones (and sometimes off-world) at any time. It's also one of the best-looking games of recent years and a true showcase of the power of VR on PC. Don't miss Wanderer – it's easily one of the best PC VR games.
A Fisherman's Tale
A Fisherman's Tale remains, to this day, one of the smartest and most striking uses of VR. You've probably heard of its principle, which relies heavily on recursive puzzles. You play cooperatively in the single-player mode, passing objects between larger and smaller versions of yourself. It's a stunning sight, but the game is also anchored by a curious story of authorship and a warm visual style. It's still a treat and one of the best PC VR games to date.
Compound (Early Access)
It's hard to make a VR shooter feel genuinely adventurous and not be too overwhelming for the player. Compound achieves this by referencing a classic era of shooters that dictate a slower, more manageable pace. The result is a supremely enjoyable roguelite FPS that puts you right in the action, with period visuals that are a must in VR headsets. Additionally, developer Not Dead has been constantly updating the game since its initial launch in 2018, making it one of the best PC VR games out there, although it's still in early access.
Wilson's Heart (Oculus only)
If you have the ability to step back and seek out the lost era of Oculus PC VR exclusives (back when, you know, Oculus still existed), we highly recommend starting with Wilson's Heart. Twisted Pixel's first VR game is a brilliant throwback to 1940s horror that makes incredible use of VR motion controls while proving that VR storytelling is new. If Meta had a heart, he would let the game live again on SteamVR and Quest.

We've bundled the first two episodes of Cloudhead Games' compelling adventure series together because the first episode is shorter and the two together cost about the same as a normal VR game. ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission
Launched in 2018, this PS VR exclusive is an adventurous 3D platformer. You play as Astro, the robot captain of a ship in charge of going on a rescue mission to recover bots lost all over space. The game sets up different courses that you have to navigate Astro through.
Although in third-person perspective, you're immersed in the middle of the game for the best view to figure out how to help Astro move smoothly and rescue his poor crewmates.
Rez Infinite
Rez Infinite is one of the original PS VR launch titles of 2016, and it transformed the iconic original, Rez, from the Sega Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 days of yore, into virtual reality.
Well, that's the perfect transformation. Rez Infinite 260 shooter that will have you spinning and blasting waves of enemies every time.
It's not a game that was designed with VR in mind, but it's certainly one that benefits from the fully immersive experience that VR can provide. Developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi is a master of synaesthesia, ie the mixing of images and sounds, and he is responsible for another game that we will talk about later.
Blood & Truth
The only first-person shooter on our list, Blood & Truth has been fully transported to virtual reality for the PS VR. Exclusive to PlayStation Studios, Blood & Truth forces you to smash your way through the crime-ridden underworld of London.

Marvel's Iron Man VR
You will need to equip yourself with PS Move motion controllers for this game. You will become Iron Man and embark on an all-new original adventure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In Iron Man VR, you face the mysterious Ghost, a hacker who seeks revenge for the deaths caused by old Stark Industries weapons. You don the iconic armor and soar through the sky as the PS VR headset lights up like Iron Man's HUD.
If that's not what virtual reality was designed for, we don't know what is.
Moss
After all the Iron Man VR drama, we're calming things down with Moss, a highly artistic action-adventure game. You follow Quill, a mouse on a mission, who awakens an ancient magic and travels outside his own world to restore balance.
As you observe and assist him on his journey in third person, Moss is an unusual VR game, but one that reads like an interactive storybook where the puzzles get progressively harder.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Exclusive to PS VR, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has become one of the first triple-A games to feature a fully playable virtual reality mode.
This is survival horror that's closer and more personal than you could get thanks to developer Capcom's port of the game to the PS VR. And, according to Capcom's official global stats, as of September 2021 just over a million players have tried it on PS VR, or 11,75% of all players. But beware, this is not for the faint-hearted.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew
If you've always dreamed of boarding the USS Enterprise or the USS Aegis, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is for you.

Play ordinary games on VR
Whether you have an Oculus Rift or an HTC Vive, you can enjoy SteamVR. Steam lets you play any game in your library, even 2D games not made for VR, in a virtual 'desktop theater' mode on your headset of choice.
This feature doesn't turn any old game into a fully immersive VR game with head tracking. It's just not possible. Instead, you'll be placed in a virtual theater and the game will take place on a giant 2D screen that you can view in the theater.

It's a lot like watching videos on a VR headset. It's cool to sit in a virtual cinema and see your acting take up most of your vision. But the same disadvantages apply. VR technology is still new and needs more time to improve. You won't see as much detail as if you were playing the game on your normal PC screen.
There are other tools to do this, but SteamVR's desktop cinema mode is free and built into Steam itself. It uses the same technology as Steam Broadcasting. If a game works with Steam Broadcasting, it will work with Desktop Cinema Mode.
If you have an Oculus Rift, you must first enable Unknown Sources before proceeding, so that SteamVR can use your Oculus Rift headset. By default, the Rift only allows apps from the Oculus Store, which means SteamVR and Steam games won't work.
